How do I make my Blackberry 'ring' when I get a text?

I have set the ring tone for the phone, but can't seem to find a way to get it to alert me when I get a text, which has meant I've missed a couple of time-critical texts from friends.

Can anyone help?

Make and model of the device?

DH has a BlackBerry, I hate the bloody thing.

It's an 8700g.

NDP - afraid it's pretty much an essential for me, as I'm often out of the office and need to keep on top of e-mail as we don't have full time PA support.

I'm already losing the will to live having to deal with all the spam on it!
