Are these products scams? Or do they actually do something? Our disc players seem to be getting flakier and flakier ...

You need to clean the little lens with a cotton bud dipped in meths.

I don't know about the products that claim to 'resurface' cds & dvds - sounds a bit unlikely to me.

Oh, no, I'm not talking about cleaning the disks - just the players. I thought there were discs that purported to clean the players?

How do I get to the lens? Cleaning it makes sense, but it's pretty hidden away ... I assume I can't just start opening the boxes up and hoping for the best?

It varies from one model to another. My kids have portable ones where you can see the lens.

We've also got an ancient Pioneer stacking midi system with a 6-disc changer. You can't get to it on that one so I bought a cleaning set that had 2 little brushes stuck on a disc and you had to put cleaning fluid on them.

Didn't make any difference at all, so I sent it off for to a local company and they took it to bits and cleaned it - it's been working fine ever since.

Hmm, that's what I suspected, re: the discs with brushes on them etc. Will talk to DH, think about options, maybe ask around for local repair shops ...

Make sure you get a quote in advance, though. I think mine cost about £80 but we thought it was worth it as it had cost a fair bit originally. It has proved to be ok as it's still fine mow - 4 or 5 years later. I'm so tight I can't bear chucking stuff out!

Can't spell, either - NOW not mow
