For the first time in around 20 years, dh and I are going to buy a new tv and finally get a dvd player. Is there anything we need to know ? I assume all tvs are digital compatible these days? is that the same with dvd players? I want to be able to tape off the tv too so dvd player has to be able to do that but maybe they all can these days? Also, may get sky to watch cricket, does that have any bearing on tv/dvd type ie don't want to duplicate functions? Any advice for dvd dinosaur welcomed.

yes you are very right the best 42 inch at the mo is a toshiba whch has a 2 million pixel , rate but thios is pricey £1800, i dont know your budget but the next best thing is depending on the size screen you want.
32 inch you should aim at anything that is 1024 * 768 or similar, we bought a sansung from currys which is the latest model with no visible speakers the above pixel rate for £799
Makesure it is TRUE HD ready the salesman will know what you mean, it is also a good idea to buy a tv with two HDMI slots as some older models come with one
