Bike carrier for cars? Can they carry kids bikes?

I am looking for a way of carrying our kids bikes without putting them in the boot. Halfords told me the boot was the only option, and that the bike carriers which hang out from the rear of a car (ours in an estate) can only carry adult bikes. We have bikes for a 3 and 5 year old, the former with stabilisers. So I need to know whether he was talking rubbish or not - any ideas?

But it is not very good in reality but we hardly use it
