Does anyone here use them or who else would you recommend?

it gets stuck on one channel and you can't turn over. it doesn't happen alot and i imagine it happens with all providers but can't be sure.

Carameli · 17/10/2006 13:55

so is it just a question of sort of rebooting the equipment??

no it usually rights itself or you can just unplug and reset

I HATE NTL - we have all 3 services with them and when we move I will never, ever use them again (can't be bothered to change right now as it's a bit of a hassle). Their Customer Service absolutely stinks! Everything is OK if all is working fine but if not then don't bother asking them for help! And yes the TV does keep stalling (my Mum has Sky and had it for years and never has this problem).

Earlier this year our desktop pc went bang, we got it repaired and needed to reinstall the NTL broadband software (which we couldn't find). Asked them to send a new one out - it took them 7 weeks to send out a CD!!!! After endless phone calls (some of which were getting irate) - they said they had a backlog and there was nothing they could to about it! Tough basically! Oh and then 3 CDs turned up the same day!

As a 3 service user was told I was entitled to a discount which I was told had been applied to our account. I rang up to query something about 3 months later and was told I was eligible for a discount - I mentioned I'd already been told this and thought I had the discount. I was told "oh no, you have a discount for 2 services but not for the 3rd one - I'll add it now"???? So I asked if the discount could be backdated if I'd been eligible for about 9 months and it should have been activated on my account - the answer "er no"!.

I called to ask about the £30 for 3 services that they advertise (as we use all 3 now and pay a lot more!!!). Was told it was for 'new customers only'! (sounds like that bank advert) So I asked if there were any other discounts we could get, the answer was 'yes we can apply 'said' discount'. When I asked why I hadn't received this one sooner the answer was "we have 1000s of customers, we can't just go applying discounts to every customer as we don't have the time, if you ASK for the discount we are obliged to give it to you, but only if you ask" WTF?

Sorry to rant, but I hope you get the picture of how utterly crap they are. Please don't touch them with a bargepole. The only saving grace I can think of is that now they have merged with Virgin perhaps things are improving but I've seen no evidence of it so far...... They are always on Watchdog for being crap!

Carameli · 17/10/2006 14:22

oh dear, that really does not sound good at all.

Sorry for ranting but imo I'd steer clear before you get 'sucked' into them. It's not so easy when you have all 3 services with them as it's such a hassle to change them all and get them working together properly. Hope you get it sorted soon

is NTL the same as Telewest? DH is pressurising me to chnage.

lucycat · 17/10/2006 15:51

ntl have just bought out/merged with telewest.

We've not had a problem with them and apart from their customer service shutting at 8pm they've dealt with our problems ok, even the online technical support, a very nice lady mended my email for me!

oh and they are good and halving your bill if you phone up and tell them you want to cancel it cos you can't afford it - I've got the Family Package - with Sky Sports, broadband and our phone for £40 a month - plead poverty.

lauralou123 · 17/10/2006 16:32

If you get sky tv, you can get free broadband, although I think there is an installation charge. They also do unlimited landline calls for £5 (I think), but you have to have a BT line, which is £11 a month if I remember correctly.

Also, have you looked at moneysavingexpert.com, has all the best deals on utilities etc
