Competition to find the most elderly foodstuff in the collective Mumsnet larder

I have just found some dried sage which says best before 2003, but I don't reckon that's anywhere near the oldest, rankest, most dodgy and out of date substance in the Mumsnet kitchen cupboards. Go and have a poke about and tell us what you find.

Just found a tub of Saxa table salt right at the back of a cupboard from before they put date stamps on

At least it proves that its been donkeys years since we put salt on our food and I've binned it now

Posey · 05/10/2006 14:43

Nothing very old since I had a clearout after the embarrasment of a thread like this a while ago

MerlinsBeard · 05/10/2006 14:44

i thought salt didn't have a date because it doesn't go off? we rarely use it anyway so nick it from PIL when we go there!!

ilovedolly · 05/10/2006 14:48

the trick is to move every few years as yu have to throw out the oldies
once was at my MILs house making a sandwich and found a jar of mustard dating from 1996. Just put it right back without opening...........

clairemow · 05/10/2006 14:50

My FIL has some honey that has a sell buy date of ..... wait for it..... mid 1980s (can't remember which year). Apparently, honey doesn't go off... but it does go solid and have to be "softened" in the microwave before use...

Legacy · 05/10/2006 14:50

PhantomCAM · 05/10/2006 14:56

Maybe the salt doesn't go off but the cardboard container looked filthy and as if it was falling apart

zippitippitoes · 05/10/2006 14:56

also a bottle of John Smith beer to clebrate the marriage of Lady Diana Spencer to HRH

Olihan · 05/10/2006 15:01

My PILs were clearing out the larder of FILs aunt and found tins that were too old to have use bys and had expanded outwards, almost to the point of exploding. God knows how old they were. Just before they did that we went to visit and she made us tinned salmon sandwiches. I dread to think how old it was!!

FrankenZooey · 05/10/2006 20:52

Bumping as I am sure one of us can beat 2001. Infamous tins and packets from other people's cupboards don't count, it has to be present in your kitchen at this moment in time.

I win, I win!!!

I cleared out the herbs and spices cupboard last week and found some tarragon from 1993!!!

Littlefish · 05/10/2006 22:39

Oh poo, just read that it has to be in your cupboard now. Perhaps if I go and check the dustbin I can still find it
