Been left two nice chairs BUT not fire retardent...what to do?

I've been left two nice only chairs...I think they're what you call nursing chairs. I would like to recover these and put them in my kids bedrooms but they won't be fire retardent.

Do I need to have the whole thing re-upholstered or can I cover them in fire retardent fabric?

Any suggestions?

I think you can have them re-upholstered in flame retardent fabric, but if they are antique (or produced before 1950?) then the law doesn't stipulate complusory flame retardent coverings. However, if you were doing it for your own piece of mind, I'd have them done professionally.

The frivolous part of me wanted to say "burn them"
The practical part says, are they likely to be exposed to fire? The majority of items in housesare not fire retardent.

Thanks....will investigate the cost of reupholstery.

i'm not sure but think you can get a spray to make them resistant

You may not want them to have flame retardent chemicals on them. They have been found to accumulate in the body and may disrupt hormones! - Look at the WWF website

They should be ok in a bedroom away from flames?

re-upholster them. My nan left one for my sis. She had it recovered for around £100 ish...

Do what my MIL did, sign-up to an evening class in basic upholstery skills and do them yourself as you have to provide a piece to re-upholster in the class

Thanks everyone.

Would truly love to Betty but have no time at all at the mo.
