I always used the ones you pop on their forehead.

Braun Thermoscan. We bought it as dh uses the same one at work (paramedic)

We got the braun one too, which goes in the ear. It's brilliant, only takes a couple of seconds for an accurate reading, rather than fussing around trying to get them to keep still long enough. Pricey though - about £40.
