Can I return this dress??

I recently bought this dress in Monsoon to wear to a wedding. It is a lovely dress and I felt great in it and I have worn it once since.
The problem is that the material has snagged badly and it looks awful, the dress cost £80 which is a lot of money to me, do you think I can return it after wearing it twice? I seem to remember that there was a tag stating that the material was delicate.
Opinions needed please?

I remember your thread. You were wondering about wearing a suit to begin with?

If you'd washed it according to the instructions I'd certainly giver it a go.

Molesworth · 30/09/2006 13:50

It's worth a try!

Delicate fabric or not, if I'd only worn it twice I wouldn't expect it to snag so quickly. I'd take it back.

lulumama · 30/09/2006 13:51

if there was a warning on it.might be tricky - what did it snag on and where did you wear it? has it been washed?

MadameButterfly · 30/09/2006 13:54

Years ago I bought a dress from C&A. It had dia, antes on the shoulders.

I woore it once to a functionand on on side the diamantes started to come off.

I took it back, hoping that they would offer to repair it. The took it back and gave me a full refund.

Carmenere · 30/09/2006 13:55

Yep that's the dress Gillian, I haven't washed it yet as it is hand wash only and I was going to get it dry-cleaned, just looked at the washing instructions and it says to be careful with watches and jewelery as it might snag.
The thing is it looks awful now and I think it is a bit out of order to get just two wears out of an £80 dress.

So should I get it dry-cleaned and then return it?

"t says to be careful with watches and jewelery as it might snag. "

I think you're stuffed then I'm afraid

I wouldn't get it cleaned though, just try to return it. Besides - it's machine washable according to the website. Which makes me think that you could claim it is infact not machine washable because it snagged in the machine.

Carmenere · 30/09/2006 14:30

Right I'm confused now, should I wash it in the machine and say it snagged in machine and that they should exchange it or should I just return it unwashed and try my luck or should I dry clean it and then return it and just express my dissapointment???
I kind of feel that I have a genuine greivence even if they do say that it is delicate imo it is almost unwearable after two wears and so not fit for sale iyswim

I would be tempted wash it and then return it saying "I washed this as per the instructions and it's snagged". Which is true. It's always worth trying to return stuff even if you think they might say "get lost".

I wouldn't dry clean it because it states that it's machine washable on the website - what does the label say? I'm surprised that something so delicate can claim to be machine washable TBH.

Carmenere · 30/09/2006 14:37

Good idea although the label says hand wash only but of course I would never have bought it if I thought it was hand wash, it was advertised as machine wash........Ok I will wash it tonight, thanks Soupdragon

whilst I can understand why you're miffed this is the very reason I avoid fabrics like this.

If there is a label telling you to beware watches and jewellery chances are it was going to snag on something! I try to avoid 'hand wash' and 'dry clean' items too.

There's no harm in trying to get a refund though, they can only say 'no'!

good luck!

shhhh · 30/09/2006 20:08

I would return it. But then I am a cheeky so and so..!!

SoupDragon · 30/09/2006 20:09

Print the website page off and take it with you

shhhh · 30/09/2006 20:10

btw I would return it unwashed..IMO a dress shouldn't turn to shit after 2 wears..No matter if it had a delicate tag or not.!

Carmenere · 30/09/2006 20:17

I probably will print off the web page Soupy but tbh I kind of agree with shh, it is ruined after just two wears, surely that is against some kind of standard or other.
So do I go in with my moral stance and risk leaving with a duff dress or do I wash it and claim the conflicting cleaning instructions are the culprit?

mazzystar · 30/09/2006 20:19

there's snagging when you wear jewellery and then there's snagging when you walk/sit down. brush past someone accidentally.

they should take it back. washed.

shame, it looks like a lovely thing.

Carmenere · 30/09/2006 20:21

It actually snagged because I had my handbag under my arm, but the fabric has gone slightly ball-ish too. I'm really dissappointed tbh.

OP posts:
mazzystar · 30/09/2006 20:25

well if you can't carry a bag wearing it, what are you supposed to do? get a lady in waiting to carry it like the queen? shove a few fivers and your car keys down your bra.

big design fault

hairymclary · 30/09/2006 20:29

design fault it may be, but it does say that it may snag on stuff so tbh i don't think you have a leg to stand on!
do try your luck though, you never know

Carmenere · 30/09/2006 20:31

Yes but do I try my luck with the real complaint or do I hoodwink and get them to exchange it on a technicality.

OP posts:
hairymclary · 30/09/2006 20:34

tbh if the label says hand wash i think that would stand, rather than the website advice. after all, you'd still have to have checked the label to see temp etc etc

i would be honest. say you wore it twice and it looks awful, you're really disappointed and can they do anything about it.

CreepyCrawlyCarmenere · 04/10/2006 19:47

Well I returned it and they gave me my money back
They were lovely and said that they would this once but just be aware in the furure when buying this material.
Anyway, a result and thanks for all the advice

CreepyCrawlyCarmenere · 04/10/2006 19:47

future that is

cupcakes · 04/10/2006 19:49

do they think you will keep buying dresses like this and coming back for a refund??

CreepyCrawlyCarmenere · 04/10/2006 19:51

Well they wanted to give me another one but I said I diddn't want it as I think the dress is faulty, it would just snag again.
