Can anyone recommend a good, small car?

I'm looking for a small car for making short, local runs, to replace an ageing Citroen ZX. I'm much more interested in safety and comfort than anything else. Can anyone give me some suggestions? And what should I avoid?

We've got a V reg Punto which we inherited from my parents. Pleased with it so far (we've had it since new year). It seems very swish compared to the ageing Golf we had before.

I loved my Punto too - can fit loads in the boot & lots of leg room - much nicer than Metro & Clio (even tho I wanted the Clio desperatly - felt very let down)

A friend has just bought a honda jazz, really roomy inside ,she's really pleased with it and apparently it has won loads of awards for customer satisfaction.

I have a Micra too and love it - I could even squeeze my double buggy (when I had one) in the boot. It's very cheap to run and a doddle to park, as robinw says.

I used to have a VW Polo, I can certainly recommend that. Very reliable, no major problems in the three/four years I owned it and it practically ran on fresh air!

Skoda Fabia. Fantastic. And only uncool people make jokes about them-it says so on the adverts .

Comforatble reliable and good value. Very very cheap to run and has the VW Polo's engine.

I would recommend a peugeot 106. had it as my 1st car and was very cheap to run and i think needed serviced once in 50,000 miles of driving! i now have a new 206 and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. i think it has been back to the garage at least once a month over the past 18 months and i've now just given up! i'm changing to a grand senic now. so steer clear of the 206 but the 106 was brilliant.

I have a 106 too, bought it brand new about 3 years ago. Apart from normal services/MOT I have never had one problem with it. It is really economical and comfortable to drive, if I were going for a small car again I would definately get a 106 again.

Honda Jazz - very comfy, v clever (and V easy) things to re moving seats for carrying big loads. Comes out v well in surveys for reliability and also joint top for being least likley to be stopped by the police! Best Selling car in Japan last year and Jeremy Clarkson's mother has a pink one, so it must be good!
