Is it worth the extra for the paperwhite?

I have a kobo at the moment, but I've wanted a kindle for a while as the books are always cheaper. I have amazon vouchers to spend but only have enough for the normal kindle, is it worth paying the extra £50 for the paperwhite?

I'm an average reader, usually have a book but could also go months without one depends on my mood, I'm in a reading mood at the moment Grin

I'm having a look at buying a paperwhite at the moment because my ancient kindle is starting to act a bit like a dotty aged relative. I had a play around with my cousins on holiday and I have to say it was a very desirable piece of kit, as I do a lot of camping the backlit screen for reading in the dark appealed to me. Roll on christmas!

I've got a kindle fire, not paperwhite.

It is very difficult to read the screen in bright sunlight, whether that be to read or use an app. I guess it depends how much outdoor use your kindle will get?

WaffleWiffle · 10/09/2014 11:59

I should add that my non-paperlight is absolutely fine for reading at night. I tend to lower the brightness right down when reading in the dark, this lowers the glare. But the reading quality in the dark is fine and |I am not sure what the benefit of a backlight would be in this situation. But the difference would come in sunshine.

Yes, it is worth it IMO. Also, whilst the Fire is crap for outdoor use, the Paperwhite is just like reading an actual book.

The Psperwhite is fine in bright sunlight. I got one for my birthday last month and love it. Some people don't like the touchscreen but I'm used to ipads and find it easy to hold and turn pages one- handed.

I have heard rumours that the next generation Paperwhite will have a button-press page turn, but if so I don't know when it's due out.

Because our internet is oretty didgy at tomes, DH got me the version with 3G but I haven't used that yet - in fact I have the wifi off most of the time and only turn it on to download books.

The difference is that the Paperwhite isn't backlit. The Fire (and ipad etc) ar and this is what gives the glare. The Paperwhite is far superior to when I used to read on my ipad in the dark - it's like a glowing book.

What a timely thread!
Dh wants to get me the fire for my b day but I am going to opt for the paperwhite.
I have one of the first generation kindles and I have used it everyday for nearly 5 years!
Can't wait!

Bizkit · 10/09/2014 12:44

I like the idea of it being backlit but to be honest I don't think I would have a need for it. If the general quality of the screen and txt his better though and if it's better in sunlight?(which I'm more likely to have a need for than dark)

I also think it's slightly heavier?

I'm also waiting for my library to start offering ebooks to borrow and I don't think they work on kindle hence why I opted for a kobo before, so when they do I don't know how much I will use the kindle as I tend to borrow from library more than buy

I've read both Paperwhite and the old Touch in very bright sunshine and they are the same IMO.

OftheTwilighttheDarkness · 10/09/2014 15:57

I love mine I can read in bed without a light. It is fab.

Johnogroats · 10/09/2014 16:10

I have a Paperwhite and it's great. Occasionally I read books on the kindle app on my ipad, but much prefer to read on the kindle.

I got it when I lost my old kindle, and I much prefer the Paperwhite. And the 3G is worth it too....fab when you are on holiday and need another book to read! Or want to check out the free chapter before ordering.

My DS has a kobo and we can borrow from the library on it - but to be honest, we hardly ever do.

Bizkit · 10/09/2014 16:51

I don't know what the library service will be like when they do it, I wish I had never got the kobo as that was a few years back and the library still hasn't provided the service. I read more on the kindle app on my phone or tablet but would like the proper kindle.

I don't mind the touch screen as that's what I'm used to using, I also like the cover picture you get when the kindle is in sleep mode, I don't think the original Has this, hmm still can't decide if it's worth the extra money.
