I want it to be a surprise but I don't really know much about them. In woolworths it seemed they had too different ones, one cost about £100 more. Whats the difference between them and where to go for the best deal? Thanks

We looked at the Xbox - but opted for the PS2 in the end - the games are SOOOOOO much cheaper (not to mention that XBox are Microsoft ARGHHHH).

Flamesparrow · 19/09/2006 11:20

360 games are sooo much better though.

The difference will be what extras come with it - does it come with games/extra controllers/remote etc.

Flamesparrow · 19/09/2006 11:23

Oh - the Wii should be released by christmas too... would that be preferred?

It's probably just what it comes with - there is what they call the 'core' package, which is the console and a wired controller. The other packages have upgraded stuff like wireless controllers and DVD remote (you can play normal DVDs on it). Depends what you have to spend, but generally, you'll want to add stuff on to the basic package. THere's not alot of difference in the prices of the packages between shops - think we got ours on Amazon in the end.

Wouldn't go for the PS2 at the moment because PS3 will come out (eventually) next year, so you will find the games dry up.

Have a look through Hotukdeals to find the best deals on consoles - or anything else!!

Flamesparrow · 19/09/2006 11:36

Wireless controllers are great if you can stretch to them - no leads for children to yank out etc

Xena · 19/09/2006 11:37

what Wii?

THe DD's used to drive DH and DS1 mad with pulling the controllers out and i'm sure DS2 will by christmas will definaltly get those! Am trying to decide whether I could get away with it as a joint present for DH and DS1?

go for the more expensive, for a start it has a harddrive (no need for memory cards) and they cost about £70 on their own, and no doubt he'll want one! and you get wireless controller (no wires for the kids to fall over) and can usually get a deal that comes with games, if you know what he'll want!

Wii is the new thing from nintendo... will try and find a link. Think DH said its due out mid Nov.

Flamesparrow · 19/09/2006 12:48

wii

Flamesparrow · 19/09/2006 12:56

wii

hoppybird · 17/10/2006 11:22

My dh has been nagging me about getting this "for ds, of course". Looks quite interesting, particularly when you see it in action, here

I suggested that a bat with a ball attatched by elastic would be just as good, and cheaper! but dh didn't seem to think so for some reason.

Flamebat · 17/10/2006 11:26

Our 360 is being sold for said Wii apparantly... Seeing as 360s are notorious for a certain fault that ours now has, I'm not sorry.

hoppybird · 17/10/2006 12:11

It does appear to be the next generation thing. Surprised to see it hasn't been discussed in the context of "what shall I get for xmas for a man who has everything" or "my geeky dh has found yet another new boy's toy he desparately wants" type of threads.

To be honest, I've almost been won over, apart from the small issue of the scary price (around £180 on pre-order from HMV, for instance).

Flamebat · 17/10/2006 12:30

Still cheaper than the 360 or PS3

SCARErenity · 17/10/2006 12:45

Miles cheaper than 360 or PS3 (£500 FFS!)

If things go according to plan DSs will be getting Wii as a joint present from my Mum and sister (and then me and DH get to play with it heehee)

To go back to what someone said earlier, I don't think it's pointless to buy a PS2 - the price of the new PS3 is high enough that it's going to out of most peoples budgets for a while, and there are so many PS2s around that the market isn't going to dry up for years. They'll only stop making games when they stop producing the hardware. Our PS2 (one of the original big box ones) is knackered, so we're going to buy a new one after christmas.
