Can any cars fit 3 car seats across the back seat?

We are looking for a car that will fit 3 car seats across the back seat. We don't fancy driving round in a 'bus' style people mover if we can avoid it. Our children are 5, 3 and newborn. Any suggestions?

We bought a Fiat Multipla for the 3 car seat factor - 4, 2 and a newborn.

Love it despite my first reservations about it being bus-like. Really easy to drive and I love the fact the children can get into the seats themselves leaving me just to put the seat belts on. They love being higher up and having a good view out of their window. We have so many discussions about what can be seen out of the different windows.

Newborn not here yet so the lack of bending in and out and leaning has been great with a bump.

We have our 5, 4 and 1 year old in car seats in the back of our Kangoo. It's no bigger tahn a normal car. Very easy to drive and huge boot.

Furball · 17/09/2006 16:50

Apparently the Honda FRV can

Gobbledigook · 17/09/2006 16:51

We used to get all 3 across the back of a Mondeo - I had the baby seat and 2 Britax Eclipse - the first forward facing ones you get from 9KG upward. Was a bit of a squash, but possible.

we had a honda frv - yes three seats accross the back and not even that tight a squeeze

misdee · 17/09/2006 17:06

3 in the nissan tino.

We just bought Peugeot 307SW & one of the reasons was that we could take a friend out for DS1 in it (you can also add2 more seats in the boot). We didn't want people mover either, so both v.happy with this. Lovely to drive & very economical too! Haven't actually taken 3 car seats yet, but had 2 seats + adult in the middle last week, loads of space. There was exactly same discussion a few months ago if you do a search might come up with more options?

another vote for the multipla ("the Fiat Alien")

I have 6, 3 and newborn and they each have a full sized, reclining seat in the back. There are three more seats in the front. It isnt very long so is easy to park (the only bummer is the lack of boot space)

We have dds in Renault Scenic,(3, 1.5 and 4m)

You have to do your research because we found that baby carriers are quite wide, and the Zafira and some others didn't have as much room across the back.

VW touran is another good one.

we can fit three across our Berlingo - bit like the Kangoo with a huge boot that can hold a double pushchair and 2 Tripp Trapps!

NannyL · 17/09/2006 17:49

ok i can JUST fit 3 seats in the back of my renault clio

a Britax renaissance ( 9 - 18kg car seat).... starpped as far over as possible, a Britax highliner (a high backed booster) and i Britax horizon (booster cushion)...

it only "just works" but it does work and all 3 seats are in safely....

the way i do it is "baby" in first, then second eldest strapped into highliner..... then eldest on booster.... who has to lean across and i spend ages trying to feel the seat belt into the clicker...

my theory is is that if it can be done in a clio it MUST be possible in otehr larger cars, though it helps if the seats 'arnt moulded' and the whole of the back is as flat as possible in order to have the seats safely strapped in!

foxtrot · 17/09/2006 18:06

I have a mondeo estate and can get 3 in the back. At the moment i have 2 Britax Freeway and a Highliner booster, but have had 3 Freeways, or 2 Freeways and a rockatot. On the Britax fit finder website you can search by car make for fit or call their customer services, who can advise. britax

alison222 · 17/09/2006 18:48

can get 3 in the back of my Mazda premacy

Bluebear · 17/09/2006 18:51

Yet another vote for the Multipla - I love mine, bought because it fits 3 car seats but it's turned out to be a lovely car to drive, kids love the high seats/low windows, and we have the option of removing any spare seats so freeing up space for luggage (eg. camping gear).

emkana · 17/09/2006 22:34

We have a Honda FRV and it fits three in the back easily. We're very pleased with it. (And it's not as ugly as the Multipla )

jamiesam · 17/09/2006 22:38

We can fit seats for ours who are 5 and 3 and baby due in October in our Volvo 740 (bit old fashioned but more recent model V70 is same size, a friend has) and loads of boot space for pram/shopping.

Gillian76 · 17/09/2006 22:38

Our Zafira is a tight squeeze to get them all in the middle. We only do it when needing the boot i.e going on holiday.

DS in his fixed seat in the middle and the girls in high back/boosters on either side. I do think it depends on the seats, tbh. We got new ones when we got the Zafira in December as the old ones were huge! We had a VW Sharan before so were downsizing

jamiesam · 17/09/2006 22:39

(oh, and don't be afraid of the length of volvos - it has the best steering lock, easier to parallel park than our previous car, a golf)

jasper · 17/09/2006 22:57

Rav4
wonderful car

Olihan · 17/09/2006 23:27

We've got 3 across the back of our Zafira, a britax hi liner, britax freeway and a britax babysure. Could also fit 2 freeways and a hi liner or 2 hi liners and a freeway. Does depend on the model though. Ours is 52, so only has a middle lap belt, hence freeway as fits with just lap belt.

foxtrot · 18/09/2006 08:26

the freeway is one of the narrower seats, useful ina tight squeeze.

Bugsy2 · 18/09/2006 09:18

you can in my Volvo. Bit of a squeeze but definitely possible.

slalomsuki · 18/09/2006 09:38

I have a renault scenic and just driven back from scotland with 3 full size car seats across the back and a baby in the front. Great car plenty of boot space and very ecconimical

Gillian76 · 18/09/2006 14:23

Just drove a Vauxhall Meriva this morning as our Zafira was in for a service. I got 3 seats in the back. It was a squeeze, especially buckling up but no worse than the Zafira really.
