If 8k is your budget, I advise asking yourself a question.
Q: Do I want to replace the car for something bigger in the future?
If YES, go for a second-hand Fiesta, Toyota Aygo or Seat Ibiza.
If NO, invest your 8k in a second-hand Volvo S60. Bite the bullet with the road tax/fuel bill and relax. You're in the safest reasonably-priced second hand car EVER MADE. ( Side Impact Protection System. It saved my life ).
Hope this helps.
Regards, Rich ( ex-Vehicle Delivery guy ).

And how is any of that going to cope with where I live and work and my lifestyle? I'm sure my ifor Williams trailer will be perfectly capable of being towed complete with fat arsed bull from a Volvo or a fiesta across a hill farm in rural Scotland, I would also look forward to getting an aygo out in the 6 foot snow drifts we get usually November to Feb. Not every pregnant woman or mother is in the same boat. For now I think I will stick to my ford ranger and use the tractor when it struggles.

Or you could just get a 3 series instead.
