A good male friend is turning 40 soon - can't think of what to buy. What would you suggest?

how much is the budget?

Bellie · 15/09/2006 08:40

depends on how much you want to spend and what they are into!
For my best friend (who is male) I bought him a family session with a photographer and one picture as he is a true family man and did not have any family photos of all of them.

Other things that he had a presents were, fine wine, bottle opener (v posh one) grooming voucher for a trendy store in london, leather passport holder (he travels a lot). hth

You could get a really cheap MP3 player and put 40 of his favourite songs on it.

For my DH's birthday my sister put together a box of things from the year he was born / his childhood, e.g. single that was no. 1, comics, a DVD of Camberwick Green, a newspaper. She sourced most of it from Ebay. It was fabulous looking through it all and I really appreciated the thought and effort. An alternative idea is a bottle of port, wine or whisky from 1966.

or if he is a foorball fan, i guess an england shirt from the 1966 era?

Thanks for suggestions but I'm short on time - birthday is tomorrow evening so need to get present tomorrow. Any other thoughts?

Do a search on Amazon for "40" - lots of funny books etc - and then buy it from somewhere else tomorrow

Hmmm, for dh's 40th someone got him a CD "Funeral" by Arcade Fire, he thought that a funny present and the CD is quite good too! How about a flask that you can get personalised in a key making shop? Or one of those swanky leatherman tool kits? Champagne with glasses? Wine that he can cellar? A pension book holder?

someone else on mn suggested the book "dangerous book for boys" when i was looking for a present. it has very good review on amazon and certainly a friend of ours who were at our house the day before the birthday (before i had the chance to wrap it up) spent the whole evening reading it! here

oops!

Fez, thanks for great suggestion. Got the book and then bought the bits for the "Essential kit" (compass, magnifying glass, penknife at Marks and then DH blagged a fish hook off someone at the park!). Made a really lovely present.
