Can you take stuff back, without a receipt, and swap for other it for other stuff?

Someone has bought DS2 some truly hideous clothes, need to swap them!!

I've noticed a lot of stores have tightened up recently limiting exchange/refund to 28 days and a receipt (Woolworths ) for example. As you didn't buy them and have no proof of purchase to determine when they were bought and at what price, and they are not faulty, they may say no.

Olihan · 11/09/2006 21:52

Next are pretty good at swapping stuff without a receipt, or they'll give you vouchers. The only thing is, if the price that comes up on the till is the sale price, then that's all you'll get, they won't give you the full value, even if you know they weren't bought in the sale.

MerlinsBeard · 11/09/2006 21:53

i used to work in a shop and the 'deal' was that you had to have your reciept and the items be in resellable condition. In reality i would give an exchange at the current selling price if there was no reciept and the item hadn't been worn/washed etc. No money or vouchers though.

Tommy · 11/09/2006 22:04

I think Next are pretty good with this sort of thing - are the tags still on the clothes?

shhhh · 12/09/2006 15:33

Next usually exchange or offer GV if no receipt. Like others have said if the item is now reduced you will get the lower amount. I find them good though tbh.

Pixiefish · 12/09/2006 15:35

Next have the red dot on the tag to indicate sale goods and are generally pretty fab about taking stuff back

shhhh · 12/09/2006 15:39

PF is right actually. I just remembered a shirt dh's mother got for him which he didn't want. It was up to me to take it back. I went without a receipt and expected to get the reduced amount as the sale was now on but got the full price. They advised me that if the item was reduced and bought at the reduced amount then this red dot would indicate it.
I;m sure I was offered vouchers..a while back now and pregnancy brain has the better of me..!!

Pixiefish · 12/09/2006 19:21

Red dot is sale item and green dot is the next to nothing clearance outlets that you get at the shopping outlets like Cheshire Oaks

BethAndHerBrood · 12/09/2006 19:28

Thanks for the replies!

The clothes have obviously been bought out of the catalogue, as they are in plastic and still have labels on.

Will give it a try later in the week.

I will be able to return them to a store will I? Even though they're out of the catalogue?

ANAconda · 12/09/2006 20:19

there doesn't seem to be a consistent policy as i've had diff experiences in 2 diff branches. one gave me vouchers to value of current selling price, other would only exchange.

Flutterbye · 12/09/2006 20:42

I took back a whole load of pressies for my new baby girl, the assistant in Next said that it had been reduced in the sale but because it was bought at full price I could exchange (with no receipts) to the full original value, yippeee, loads of goodies! I ditched the summer dresses and bought fleecy tops, trousers, socks, etc, etc. Practial stuff that no one thinks to buy you.

CountTo10 · 12/09/2006 20:48

Next are usually very good with this type of thing and there's no distinction between store and catalogue. I've returned items form the catalogue to the store nearly 4 mths later and they've accepted them back no questions asked!! I had a similar situation when our lo was born - no recipt but all the tags and they exchanged them no probs so hopefully you should be ok.

shhhh · 13/09/2006 20:55

yes catalogue items can be returned to the store. They have no way of telling..unless of course you ahve the invoice that came with them from the catalogue..!!

Kelly1978 · 13/09/2006 20:59

hmm you could make money like this! sale items bought online don't have the red dot, so if you took them back tot he store, you could say you paid full price for them and swap them for new season clothes!

shhhh · 14/09/2006 16:13

now theres a loop hole..!!

Rojak · 14/09/2006 16:19

It doesn't work that way with Next - if the item has been in the sale, you will only get the equivalent of the sale price for it in exchange (even if red dot is not present) - that's been my experience.

BethAndHerBrood · 19/09/2006 16:25

Quiick Update - took the items back to Next today. Was told they need the invoice from the catalogue order. " You can't return them without it"

So what do I do now?

DS2 will not be wearing these clothes, they are not what I would put a baby in at all!

OP posts:
Tommy · 19/09/2006 16:52

you could try phoning the next catalogue helpline - they've been extraordinarily helpful to me over the last few weeks when it has all been my fault

BethAndHerBrood · 19/09/2006 17:06

Just rung Next (thanks for the tip!) No luck - Need the customer number to return them.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is it worth taking them out of the plastic, and denying all knowledge of where they were bought from?? The stuff will be for sale in the shops as well, won't they??

OP posts:
MrsSpoon · 19/09/2006 17:15

I would be inclined to take them out of the plastic and take them back, saying they were a present and you don't like them/need them, can you exchange them. No lies told and they won't be able to tell that they are from the catalogue (or at least I don't think they will).

shhhh · 19/09/2006 17:55

TBH I would have taken them out of the plastic to start with..! Try another next branch just incase they recognise you from your 1st attempt..!

Remove the plastic and try again, I have no idea how they could tell they are from the directory then..surley they would just look like branch stock..?

Go for it again..!!

flowertot · 19/09/2006 18:03

Yes you can take directory stuff back to store - I have done it many times, but obviously you have to make them look like they were bought from store as Directory is a different company. I have done it when they were far beyond the 2 weeks return date. You just get vouchers but that is fine, especiaclly if you just want to exchange them for nice things

BethAndHerBrood · 19/09/2006 18:14

Right, will try again without the plastic wrapping!! Will also go to a different store! I'll wait till the weekend, i'm going to the trafford centre i think.

OP posts:
BethAndHerBrood · 22/09/2006 13:42

Right!! Removed all wrapping, took them back to a different next, swapped one nasty outfit for four gorgeous outfits and a fleecy sleepsuit!! No problem at all. The nice boy on the till even added them up for me so I knew how much I had to spend!!
