Washing machine - worth repairing?

The selector dial has broken on my washing machine. I think it is about eight years old. It's integrated - which means replacement cost lowest at ?400 - most nearer ?800. New baby in two months - with associated money squeeze/heavy use of machine.

Will it be cost effective to ask a repair man round? Or will I just be stung for a couple of hundred quid, just for the machine to break again? It's all I can do not to take a screwdriver to the bl**dy thing myself!

If you know what's broken they should be able to give you a rough price over the phone

Wow - what a fantastic site! Thanks!

I thought that repairmen were like masons - never gave away their secrets!
