about the £5-£8 range as it is only a birthday party? she is quite girly and also rather smart for her age. just started school this week.

My DD loves Geomag, its a magnetic game and great for stretching the mind. I think the small pack is £9.99 though.

Alternatively the Rainbow Magic Fairy books (Daisy Meadows) are going down a storm with my DD and her friends.

My dd2 is going to her friend's 5th birthday party on Sunday. We've bought her a paint your own coin bank and a big packet of marshmallows. I asked dd2 (4) what she would like for her birthday in November and she told me a Peppa Pig Playhouse. So there you have it!

Hama beads. Stationery set (M and S do a Princess one) with pens activity books, stickers. Girly bags decorated with beads or a basket - Monsoon have some lovely bangles and accessories. Craft sets - dd got a simple sewing set to make a purse and bag.

DD loves

The fairy books mentioned below
any sort of stationery set - dd got 5 for last birthday and has gradually used (and lost bits) from allof them. Especially felt pens or princess things
hair ties and clips
any sort of craft set
dressing up clothes - but they cost more
one of those magnetic drawing boards
jigsaws
