IPOD help for thickie....

DH has vaguely mentioned he might like an IPOD for his birthday and as he probably won't come up with any other suggestions thats probably what I'll get him !

However, I have no idea about them(and neither does he). I don't think he'll use it a great deal so I need one that is cheapish but good ! Any recommendations.

Also, a VERY stupid question but do you download your own cd's onto it or just download them from the www, or both ?

You can rip cd's through Itunes. You can also buy music through Itunes but you're probably as cheap buying a cd and putting it on to the IPod. I have a Zen Photo by Creative. Same idea but cost a lot less. The good thing about IPods is the number of accesories you get. You can get a thing that goes on the top which allows it to be tuned into an FM radio, like the one in the car. Also if you buy from Apple's online shop, you can get it engraved free. Nice if it's a pressie.

anniediv · 04/09/2006 16:46

You can do both, I have got loads of my own cds on mine. Also, do you mean a cheap ipod or a cheap mp3 player? Ipod is a brand of mp3 player. Depending on what gadgety features you want, and how big a memory you want, you can get really cheap mp3 players from Tesco and Asda online.

thanks - I did sort of know that an Ipod was a type of MP3 but you're right to point it out ! DH did say IPOD but I suspect he doesn't know the difference. I can't think he'd be bothered about different accesories although the radio attachment might be good...

Will go and have a look on line at apple store and for other mp3's (will look at the zen photo - thanks !) and will probably be back with extra questions !! thank you.

wheelybug, I have got the radio attachment for mine (itrip), it's great! I do love gadgets though! It's great for the car.

wheelybug · 04/09/2006 17:27

thanks ! Have had a look around the apple site and had a chat with my brother, who I suddenly remembered had one. I think I'll probably go for a nano as I don't think he needs a big memory. Also like the idea of the accessories - it could be christmas and birthday presents sorted for a while !

dh got me a nano for my birthday - and i love it. It's such a great design - just feels really nice to touch. And I've been pleasantly suprised by what a piece of piss it is to work, put your own cds on etc. I swear my mum could probably have sussed it (and she struggles witha remote control...)

wheelybug · 04/09/2006 18:10

great - that should mean dh has half a chance then !!

Now - an aesthetics question - my brother said they get really scratched and this shows up really badly on the black one which would have been my first choice. Any thoughts ? Are the white ones better in this respect?

The ipod nano comes in a little pouch sort of a thing, you can also get covers of various types from the Apple store. The back of the nano is shiny silver metal, he might be referring to that getting scratched.

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 04/09/2006 19:46

mine's white (and looks lovely) - haven't had it long enough to scratch it - but am keeping it in it's little cloth pouch as much as possible.

iPodthereforiPoor · 04/09/2006 20:37

I've got a black nano - its not so much scratched as finger-printed but its sexy anyway - I keep mine in a case than can dangle round my neck at the gym.

Do it, get the black nano - it looks so pretty , and by the time it starts to get marked you will love it anyway!

Anniediv - How good is the sound from the itrip?? I'm tempeted to get one when they become legal in GB.

MrsSpoon · 04/09/2006 20:44

Would recommend Napster for downloading. My DH has a subscription that costs around £10 a month for unlimited downloads. We have a white iPod and it hasn't been too bad for scratching (think the black one would show the scratches worse) but did buy a skin not longer after purchase which gives it a bit more protection.

FWIW my DH think his Ipod is the business despite already having a different MP3 player that he uses for his guitar backing tracks. He has the 60gb and thinks it's fab as you can get your entire music collection on it.

Depending when the bday is, you might want to hang on to see if these new (rumoured) models materialise:

sorry I didn't come back to this folks - thanks for all the latest tips ! DH has now said he doesn't want one but wants a wireless music system thingy for the house when we move.... about 10 times the cost of course ! damn !

But at least I know about ipods now. I think they look fab and I'd love one but know I'd never have cause to use it ! Ah well...
