HELP! American and/or Canadian Ex-pats...what is wrong with my laundry!!!

Why is it CRUNCHY? WHAT DO I DO??? My baby's clothes are all scratchy, even if I use fabric softener. I have a washer/condenser dryer combo.

Is it my machine? Is it the hard mineral water in London?

Do they make "American" style washers and tumble dryers here? Can anyone recommend a brand?

My baby gives me such dirty looks when I try to dress her in these sandpaper garments! (and let's not even talk about my towels....)

Any other ex-pats figured out a way around this problem, is it just me?

Please help, else must consider life as nudist!

Crunchy?

I don't know anything about condenser dryers - maybe hanging clothes up would be better? Or (god forbid) ironing them?

Or are you maybe using too much detergent?

You can get American style ones here, but I don't know how they'd make a difference.

(Our clothes are probably always crunchy? We hang them up to dry. We were using NA style washers and dryers while on holiday, and did find clothes that had been tumble-dried a lot softer ... not important enough to get a dryer for, I think.)

Try Calgon to soften the water

coderoo · 04/09/2006 15:36

NotQuiteCockney · 04/09/2006 15:37

Ironed clothes are softer, aren't they?

I bet you iron all your clothes, don't you, fishy one?

expatinscotland · 04/09/2006 15:37

I can't say I've noticed.

I have a memory like a sieve.

A terrific quality for the life-long expat.

coderoo · 04/09/2006 15:37

expatinscotland · 04/09/2006 15:38

cod irons her knickers, methinks.

NotQuiteCockney · 04/09/2006 15:39

Why not bras?

(I never iron anything, the cleaner irons DH's work shirts.)

Flamesparrow · 04/09/2006 15:39

pmsl @ this thread - I wanna go to America and wear soft clothes now!!!!!

I didn't realise mine were crunchy... discovered this morning that my child raising is crunchy too...

coderoo · 04/09/2006 15:39

i dont iron bras
cos theyd burn nonce head

LIZS · 04/09/2006 15:40

Check your detergent. It may be more concentrated than you are used to or perhaps using a different cycle with longer rinse may help ?

JessaJam · 04/09/2006 15:40

Well, you don't want a crunchy crotch do you?

coderoo · 04/09/2006 15:40

oh just crunch and be happy
ti he blitz spirit

NotQuiteCockney · 04/09/2006 15:41

Why would bras burn, but pants wouldn't?

(What does "nonce head" mean?)

MrsFio · 04/09/2006 15:42

its not real water in london, its london water for london people. They have a radar on the water meter that gives you crunch endorsing clothes if you are an american

coderoo · 04/09/2006 15:42

cos bras are ofetn polystery arent they
unless yours are all cotton
oh FGS!!!!

expatinscotland · 04/09/2006 15:42

ironed clothes are softer, but line dried ones smell better, IMO.

coderoo · 04/09/2006 15:42

coderoo · 04/09/2006 15:43

expatinscotland · 04/09/2006 15:44

they exempt sad excuses for Americans like me, who nearly got tossed out of the country for drinking at lunch, smoking cigarettes, wearing red lippy w/no other makeup besides mascara and taking the piss out of people, then getting in the huff when they just would not take the piss back!

NotQuiteCockney · 04/09/2006 15:45

What about hemp bras?

(I think some of mine are cotton, some synthetic. Anyway, aren't some pants not cotton? (not mine, though))

coderoo · 04/09/2006 15:46

as if

expatinscotland · 04/09/2006 15:47

if you're that lentil-weavey, though, NQC, why not just burn the bra entirely?

makes the norks more accessible for bf'ing, too.

NotQuiteCockney · 04/09/2006 15:49

I'm not that lentilweavery, actually - I just play a lentilweaver on MN.

(And making BF easier is not a good thing, DS2 has taken to "honking" my boobs to express interest in them lately )

coderoo · 04/09/2006 15:49
