My friend bought some thick sponge stuff froma factory and covered it in oilcloth for this purpose.
But couldn't stay out all the time.

or you can buy ripped up rubber tyres..like bark chippings..but rubber..can get all diff colours too

Hmm, thanks all - this is just for a small area of the patio - how do you 'contain' the material if you know what I mean? How do you keep the squares, bits of rubber or whatever all in one place, so that they don't go shifting around the patio?
