Beware Kindle Paperwhite update

I have the older version of the paperwhite and recently downloaded the update. Just to say, if you like being able to see page numbers and such details, this update is not an improvement. I've found that I can only see page numbers/percentage read when I "open" a book, that to see where I am after reading a few pages I have to go out and come in. It's really annoying me.

After a few days of that it seemed to get a bit better, though I'm still a bit doubtful about the update, I felt I'd just about got used to the old interface etc, and it all changed.
