mattresses for cots and moses baskets - need your advice

Right, we've been given a moses basket and are probably going to buy a cot, so will need mattresses for both these. But we went into John Lewis at the weekend, and all of the mattresses seemed really horrible to me - all foam and plastic. And given how much time babies spend asleep, I wouldn't be very happy about them being so close to all those plastics and chemicals.

So, first question: am I being silly and first-time-mum about this, even though I think they are v unpleasant and I wouldn't fancy sleeping on them myself, never mind worrying about what they are made of.

Second question, if I am not being silly, where else can I get something more natural? Have had a look at Green Baby and Mamas and Papas, but is there anywhere else?

I got a foam but nicely (i.e. fabric covered one) for my baby's crib from John Lewis - she was fine on it. My thought was that I will spend more on the one for her cot (£80 from mothercare multi-layers and really nice) as she will grow out of her crib so quickly. Also because they are sick and the sick is acidic, the mattresses need to be fairly robust - and no you are not being silly first time mum!

As for where else I will have to pass I am afraid but mothercare might be worth a go. Good luck

We got ours (moses basket and cot) from The Natural Mat Company .

Had a coir one from Mamas and Papas for ds but it wore more heavily than dd's sprung Mothercare one.

thankyou for that everyone; will just have to face up to the fact that they are expensive!

I wouldn't bother buying anything for the moses basket. A complete waste of money from my experience. Mothercare matteresses seem to be the cheapest quality ones. Then again, I'm sure those natural ones are probably very nice!
