Merc A class - anyone got one

having a battle with dh at the moment. We are replacing our car, we both want a quality car, I will be driving it all the time as dh has works vehicle, he will drive at weekends.

So choice is

A class - practical, cheaper to run, tax, insurance etc

BM 318i - nice, smart, dear to insure, dear to run, dear to tax

he has always wanted a BM and I can see his point, but don't want to go over board, we are not made of money

has anyone got a A class and do you like it ? is it worth the 'badge' TIA

We had the audi A3 and a run around rust bucket for me, then dp got a works car, and we ended up selling both the rust bucket and the A3 and getting Merc A class for me.

I love it as it's a bit higher up so no more bad back getting ds in and out. Its easy to drive, not too small, not too big and economical.

Asked dp (who is a total car snob) which he's rather have and he said the merc over the bm for practicality, the badge, does 80 on the motorway comfortably and looks ok.

But ours is in black, and our neighbours got one in a greeny colour and that looks horrible

I test drove one a while back - fab car, but get the long wheel base version if you can - you get tonnes of room in the back or in the boot then (back seat slides forward/backwards depending whether you want the leg room in the back or the boot space )

We have had two A classes - both fab.

Agree get the LWB makes a big difference.

Bombs up and down the motorway no problem and easy to manouvere/park.

Merc badge (even if attached to a baby one) always better than a beamer.

DH drives an Audi and I think secretly prefers my wee Merc .

Oh thanks everyone, that really is helpful, dh did eventually say last night that he was being selfish wanting the BMW and knows really that the A class is more practical. I think the car does have what you describe as the back seat do move to make more or less boot space.

The car is navy blue BTW, think colour is quite important. Off to say I was right all along to dh. Thanks

Can any one tell me what the LWB Aclass is called, is it A170, A140 or something else trying to look for one and it would help to know what number they are. TIA

sil had an A class and loved it

golds · 16/08/2006 08:58

skribble I don't know, never heard of the LWB, but the one I'm looking at seems to have it, the one I'm after is a A140, but I think that just indicates the engine size.

The only thing that worries me is the fact that its automatic, never driven one before.

My family have had 2 bmws one being rather large which I wont say the name of it as I will get pounced on, and the other a 3 series. they have also had an Audi allroad. Personally my dad turned around and said he would never buy another BMW in his life, they are extremely costly to insure, tax and run and the parts are extremely expensive too.

The best car we had was the audi as it was solid, held the road well and was extremely economical. Why not consider an A2? They are about the same size as an A CLass?

I personally cannot comment on the A Class but in terms of the BMW i'd stay clear. They are lovely to look at but v expensive.

VW is another good manufacturers, I have a Golf and it is fantastic. It is solid, lovely to drive and plenty of room for ds buggy and stuff.

I think that the new model A Class is the same wheelbase throughout the range. We have one - it's black! - and everyone loves driving it. Without being too big, it feels safe and solid, but is still quite trendy!
