its ds's birthday next week and he will be 4. he has asked for roller skates for his birthday. he has just begun to ride his bike without stabilisers so i guess he is physically pretty able - but do you think 4 is too young? plus if not, any recommendations on type or where i can get some??? thanks.

No advice just loads of v fond memories of my roller skating days - I started when I was about 3, loved it!! Making up dances to 'into the groove'. . . .those were the days!

BTW, My little sister had the Fisher Price (?I think?) ones where the little 'un keeps their shoes on and the skates adjust in length.

ds has the Fisher Price strap on ones (4 in a block or a row) and his friend ahs the Chicco equivalent. They are pretty bulky and cumbersome but don't run away with them and adjust for growth. Both require parental help to put them on and off. I think they are fine with helmet and pads etc but neither have used them a lot.

Wow i cant believe you ds can ride a bike without stabilizer mine cant even pedal properly but then again hes only a little 4 year old He turned 4 two weeks ago and my sister bought him the fisher price ones, they are fantastic they are basically in line skates with detachable stabilizers on them. My Ds got the hang of it in about 5-10 mins but you must get the protection gear too !!!

those sound great stace - any idea where they are available from?
btw - really only just taken stabilisers off so can go about 20 yards max and lots and lots of falling off! but, yes - i am very proud and chuffed.
all swings and roundabouts though isn't it - concentration span of a gnat at nursery!

i think they came from Toys r us or argos not sure which but if you struggle to find them let me know and ill ask my sis where they came from!!!
I think the attention thing is a boy thing though nursery say mine just cant sit still for fidgeting!!!

my daughter was 4.75 at christmas and we got the ones that you put on over your shoe. I really would not recommend this style at all. They made it really difficult for her to walk at all, let alone skate. She does ride a bike, but found it really hard on the skates, and took them off by the time we reached the park. Probably my least successful christmas present!
