Our PS2 isn't working, it's making a whirring sound when turned on like something's stuck in it. It's out of guarantee(of course!).

Any ideas before I have to tell ds's and save up for another one?

PS nothing IS stuck in it!!

dh thinks the disk drive may be knackered.

he says on ebay you could get one cheap. used.

iota · 28/07/2006 21:26

I found a fix on the net once -will look

ssd · 28/07/2006 21:29

ssd - not sure if it will work on the slim type - try searching the net for people with experience of your problem

have you tried 'gently' hoovering the dust out through the gaps? sounds like it needs a clean out.

ilovecaboose · 29/07/2006 19:38

OH says:
"Dust hoovering is good, it may be something ina hidden cooling fan. If that doesn't work, check the 2nd hand prices at your local game or Gamestation store then ring sony. (number for ps2 helpline in manual, or online) When out of warentee their repair service is still quite good, and it may cost less than replacement.

As a last-chance method, shut down normally, then unplug everything and gently push the lens (it should be in a little sliding block under the cover) all the way back to the closest end. It may be that this is misaligned. However, only do this if you intend to replace it anyway; if the problem's not with the lense it coul;d cause more damage.

good luck!"

mmmmmmm, guess what.

I downloaded the instructions from iota as above and on Friday night dh took apart the playstation, following the instructions. But and I hope he doesn't see this!! he's a bit crap at fixing things and surprise surprise the ps2 now is dead.

so he went out and bought the ds's a new one, £104 down...........

next time I won't tell him and just get the hoover out myself...................
