My memory is buying an old Ford Fiesta 1 litre (terracotta rusty coloured) no backseat seatbelts. I hadn't driven since passing my test months before and had finally saved enough to buy this car. Didn't even test drive it, dad checked it for me and said it was ok.
I drove off to the nearest petrol station and, once stopping by the pump realised that I didn't know what type of fuel it took; leaded, unleaded or diesel. Had to go into the kiosk and ask to borrow their phone to call my dad (before mobiles). The shame
.
I loved having my own car, sailing past the freezing, bored people at my usual bus stop. I got a promotion too, and was able to drive out to site visits
all over the north west. Those were the days...
