Has anyone got a 4x4?

We have just decided to get rid of our faithful Hippo (Nissan Micra) and branch out into the uncertain world of much larger family cars.
I have been looking at a discovery or freelander - please note all old ones not new.
Has anyone any experience of how good/bad they are please? Or any 4x4's they would recommend or MPV's
Many thanks

My point exactly GDG,(after my wee and cigarette polluting the atmosphere break!). They are dangerous even when parked, was in my friends galaxy the other day and it was considerably smaller thana landrover or whatever parked next to it. they are just getting bigger an bigger and our roads are just not big enough to accomadate them( yes i know my spelling is bad but it is getting late).

fimac1 · 07/11/2005 23:34

c&p: 'And yes they are more dangerous if you hit someone. A lot of posters have gone about the 'high driving position' and 'better visibility' - for seeing the end of the road, maybe, but not for seeing the toddler who's about to run out between two more of the great gas guzzlers parked on the side of the road'

Yes the higher driving position is great - for the passengers! Not for pedestrians - also you have blind spots while reversing because of the extra height - but thats 'OK' because you want one/can afford one and are giving two fingers to the enviroment as you put the keys in the ignition every day

Unfortunately (or fortunately however you want to look at it!) we live in Cheshire footballer/Corrie star belt and there are a lot of big black flash cars!

Thankfully not on my school run but lots in Tesco car park and round ds2's nursery.

Gobbledigook · 07/11/2005 23:35

Actually, don't want to mislead - I don't live in footballer belt but we live next to it and ds2 goes to nursery in it...ramble, ramble...

Wordsmith · 07/11/2005 23:36

Thanks Gdine, I will have a look. I'm not near Oxford tho...

mykidsmum · 07/11/2005 23:36

Even on the motorway not a sheep surely it is more dangerous to be in a collision with such a car than a mondeo estate for example, they are big f*ckers and as aforementioned for many completely unecessary.

marthamoo · 07/11/2005 23:37

Gdg, ha, you know you live in Adswood

Sorry - am not on this thread. No way.

mykidsmum · 07/11/2005 23:38

I actually think they are becoming more popular across the board GDG, what with car credit and all that they are becoming more accessable and for many are a status symbol.

Wordsmith · 07/11/2005 23:40

Have looked at the site, nothing near me - let's hope it becomes more available soon. I certainly don't like the idea of purchasing combustible fuel by mail order - what's all that about?

I also liked the idea of LPG but the tank takes up so much space it would negate the reason for buying another car in the first place.

Gobbledigook · 07/11/2005 23:41

Where the devil is Adswood?!

We are ManU footballer belt

True - and actually, despite many an enormous 4x4 there are far more silver mercs about (what is it with silver mercs - not that they are not nice but they have taken over the planet!!)

JoolsToo · 07/11/2005 23:42

its' in bloody Stockport - it's where moo lives really.

marthamoo · 07/11/2005 23:42

Ah, not Adswood (Stockport, so still Cheshire) then...Moss Side?

JoolsToo · 07/11/2005 23:43

you're on shaky ground here moo - what you saying about Adswood and Moss Side eh?

Gobbledigook · 07/11/2005 23:43

Moss Side!! PMSL!!!! Yep, I'd imagine plenty of big black 4x4s there too! Ha ha!

marthamoo · 07/11/2005 23:43

My brother used to live in Adswood - well, he still has a house there (wanna buy it?) but he's in London now. I used to live in Edgeley...far superior.

Sorry, sorry, I'm not on this thread. I walk.

Gobbledigook · 07/11/2005 23:44

Oh God, I'm in stitches!!!

skinnycow · 07/11/2005 23:44

also german engineering is pretty good to be honest!

mykidsmum · 07/11/2005 23:44

Guess I don't notice the silver mercs, probably because they don't make me cross!! Am going to bed now, nothing like a good debate to chill me out and unwind!

Gobbledigook · 07/11/2005 23:45

moo - was in your neck of the woods yesterday (I think). Put it this way, i drove down teh big main road past Tesco and the town centre, past the station and the big flash furniture shop and just by the footie ground. With me?

JoolsToo · 07/11/2005 23:45

X5 skinny?

JoolsToo · 07/11/2005 23:45

Arighi?

Gobbledigook · 07/11/2005 23:45

Are Mercs German? Audi? I'm crap on cars

skinnycow · 07/11/2005 23:45

Gobbledigook · 07/11/2005 23:46

skinnycow · 07/11/2005 23:46
