Has anyone got a 4x4?

momof2 · 04/03/2004 13:36

We have just decided to get rid of our faithful Hippo (Nissan Micra) and branch out into the uncertain world of much larger family cars.
I have been looking at a discovery or freelander - please note all old ones not new.
Has anyone any experience of how good/bad they are please? Or any 4x4's they would recommend or MPV's
Many thanks

I look a bit like Catherine Zeta Jones, only pretty.

marthamoo · 07/11/2005 23:51

Did I hijack the thread?

Gobbledigook · 07/11/2005 23:51

she;s going to pretend she doesn't know my friend down Moss Lane now!

When I went on friend's hen night, I mentioned MN to someone and she exclaimed 'MN?!' as if she was about to say 'I go on there' but then she changed the subject. It did make me think!

Gobbledigook · 07/11/2005 23:52

LOL at CZJ but pretty! OMG, I really have to go to bed!

Gdine · 07/11/2005 23:52

Wordsmith, yes I have to admit the mail order sounded strange to me - our postie is getting on and I would have the heart to inflict that on him. Luckily one of the stations is only 10 mins from us.

I am sure it will come your way eventually, I read France is gearing up to producing it big time - even their Pres drives around on the stuff now, sure it will catch on here, especially if they add some tax breaks.

What really tickled me is that apparently you can use Tesco's finest rapeseed oil in some diesels and it runs a treat. This chap told me that the commercial stuff is pretty much the same but finer grade etc.

Two problems - it has to be the right diesel car (could ruin some engines) and secondly you are breaking the tax laws (and motoring on the cheap). Think they would get suspicious down Tesco's ?

Gobbledigook · 07/11/2005 23:52

What about one of those electric numbers they are driving round London?!

JoolsToo · 07/11/2005 23:56

so why didn't you press the point GDG - god you're useless at times!

skinnycow · 07/11/2005 23:57

yes! I would have done it!

Gobbledigook · 08/11/2005 10:52

I know, I'm hopeless!

Blu · 08/11/2005 11:15

OK, so everyone is agreed that 4x4s are just silly in urban settings...and dangerous.

In fact I think that they can be a pain in rural settings, too. I don't mean driven responsibly by people who need them for a job of work, but because in the wrong hands they encourage people who have never before taken an interest in the countryside to tear all over paths. My Mum lives in a very remote rural area. Most of the locals seem to drive clapped out chevettes or Renault 5's (how those things LAST!), but every weekend, the place is abuzz by people who churn up bridleways, drive as far (and fast) as they can across marshland rather than walk, and then park nose to tail down the village high street so that no-one can see out of their windows, they are so high, two cars cannot pass, and pedestrains have to squash themselves against the wall because on the pavementless streets these people believe that the road is primarily for them.

I know this is those particular drivers, but if it wasn't for the existence of these things, and the agressive advertising that shows people having a whale of a time speeding through puddles off-road, then these folk would be safely back home or paintballing or something! AND of course, they have the room to stock up from Sainsbury's before they leave the M25, so don't add to the local ecomomy, either.

I shudder when I hear that people use their 4x4' off road for fun. It's another footpath ruined for people who like to walk, like me.

And the bald truth is, my friend still hasn't regained consciousness, and it would have been a much lesser accident if it hadn't been a 4x4.

Whilst I agree it's a personal choice and not all 4x4 drivers are irresponsible, I don't like 4x4's, mainly due to bitter experience with horrendously arrogant and inept drivers in or area. It's not the 4x4's which annoy me, it's the attitude of certain arrogant drivers of them...they feel untouchable and drive that way, with no care for other road users and pedestrians. Where we live (new estate fgs) the amount of 4x4's driven whilst the driver is on a mobile astounds me, we have had so many near misses with idiots struggling to reverse/park their massive vehicles, often whilst on a mobile, sometimes just because they can't drive them properly.
And just what would anyone in the UK need a Hummer for? Have you seen how big they are? Like a house on wheels!
We live on an island with a road network not suited to these vehicles, not the bloody great plains of the USA.

tarantula · 08/11/2005 11:41

I HATE 4x4s.

Had two very near misses today on the way to work. Both with 4x4s. No surprise there mind and they frighten the sh*t out of me. Am still shaking over the 2nd incident.
Women pulled out on a roundabout almost on top of me (my right of way). I managed to brake in time. If I hadnt and she'd hit me Id prob have been a gonner or seriously hurt. If it had been an ordinary car I reckon I'd have been pretty ok with maybe minor damage.
Horrible horrible things and a danger to all pedestrians and cyclists.

robin3 · 08/11/2005 11:51

We've got one and I feel really bad about it to be honest and quite frequently get little campaign notices on my windscreen that say 'Inappropriate Choice of Vehicle'. I know people who've had obscenities scratched on their bonnets too. If it bothers you look in to the new Lexus RX3000...I think that it's omissions are the same as the average estate car.

beatie · 08/11/2005 11:58

In the US, one child per day is killed by their own parents' SUV blindly reversing into them on their driveway.

I notice that some of the MPVs and 4X4s have an external rear mirror. I wonder why they all don't. Surely a van, lorry or minibus, with reversing blindspots, have to have enough mirrors to correct the problem.

I have to admit that I am terrified of these large vehicles and (ducks for cover) think that anyone driving a vehicle over a ceratin weight should have to obtain a special licence for it.

Aside from the fact 4X4s are 12 (? - I'm trying to remember figures here so don't quote me) times more likely to kill a pedestrian if hit by one rather than a regular shaped car, I feel that the large size and superior driving position could give the driver a false perception of safety, thus causing them to drive less cautiously.

I think I read somewhere that they aren't necessarily safer for the occupants either. When involved in an accident, they are more likely to roll than a shorter car.

Funnily enough, since I have moved from the city to a village, I see fewer 4X4s around.

Blu · 08/11/2005 12:10

beatie - I know what you mean - the rural ecomomy where my Mum lives ceratinly doesn't support many people spending £25k on a vehicle!! If they do have 4x4's it's a 30 year-old Defender.

jenkel · 08/11/2005 12:39

Agree with what somebody else mentioned on this thread.

We have 4x4.
We dont smoke, so not forcing other people to breathe in contaiminated air.
I dont stick posters on people that smoke, accusing them of using up valuable NHS funds, forcing me to breathe in dangerous substances etc.
The thing that makes this country great is 'Free Choice'.
I hope the friend that is seriously ill gets better soon.
A friend of mine was knocked down by a bus, 1 year ago, and lost both legs in central london. I think accidents are terrible things however they were caused.
I realise that large vehicles use more fuel, adding to greenhouse gases etc, but we are all at fault, unless you are totally green - solar panels, etc I dont think you can start pointing your finger at anybody.

jenkel · 08/11/2005 12:48

Also to stick a poster on a car I think is quite cowardly, if you feel strongly about it I think you should confront the driver and give them a chance to put their views across. You cant presume that they are a certain type of person based on the car they drive, and how do you know that it hasnt been converted!

tarantula · 08/11/2005 13:03

Using a 4x4 in an urban environment shows a blatent disregard for the safey of other people in particular children.
Accidents with buses and other large veichles do occur but are quite rare and the drivers of these veichles are specially trained in how to drive them safely.
4x4 drivers do not get this training and it shows as many dont seem to be able to handle their veichles properly. Again this is free choice. the choice to buy and use a veichle that is totally unsuited to the environment in which it is been driven.
And as its a free country Im afraid I can point the finger and say I think that people are irresponsible if thats waht I think and feel and I will continue to do so esp when they nearly run me over ad kill me.

JoolsToo · 08/11/2005 13:08

well said jenkel
