block paving and moss/weeds?

Does anyone have a block paved drive that doesn't have moss or weeds.I'm thinking of getting one but wondering around our neighbourhood all I see is moss and weeds.Don't fancy having to weed the drive. How do you keep yours looking nice?

I know it's dull but bumping anyway.

i don't think it can be done, nature will push its way through eventually

jampots · 24/07/2006 22:52

we use our jetwasher on our drive periodically to keep it clean but then I think it all depends on the base of your drive, the more sand you have down, the less likely you are to have weeds. Obviously if you sand the top of the drive periodically too (silver sand I think) then this too will prevent the little buggers from showing themselves

thanks,so do you weed the drive?

Don't do it!

I have block paved drive - is a complete nightmare! Am out with a stick removing the weeds/moss every 2 weeks. Had sand and liner put down first but makes no difference. Is infuriating.

hermykne · 24/07/2006 23:10

we have block and weeds but very small ones, i just use, or dh, the path clear spray thing from b & q and it works, kills them off and u just pull up - bit of exercise!

jampots · 24/07/2006 23:10

no we dont weed the drive

Have you thought about getting an imprinted concrete drive instead? We had our drive, path and patio done like this and it is fantastic. Guaranteed for 10 yrs - no sinking, no weeds, looks good as new constantly, if you pressure wash it doesn't break up. Brilliant.

thanks
aznerak, does your drive have a shiney surface to it?

Hi ggirl
No, we specifically requested a matt finish as I hate the shiny look - it doesn't look real. We opted for traditional cobblestones on the drive and then a more sandstone look for the path and patio. It isn't shiny AT ALL and looks really real. Our neighbour on the other hand had it done with another company who apparently didn't give them the option of matt or gloss and as such they have a horrid shiny drive now.

I detest it... you can get mosskillers but it involves washing, then stiff brushing. And it comes back within a month or two
Downsides to imprinted concrete are drainage and environmental issues, but maintenance wise, yes!

mythumbelinas · 25/07/2006 13:51

My parents had their drive done over a yr ago and no moss or weeds yet .. no maintenance. Saw the process and was done v well.
We had ours done at the same time (by a builder!) with a cement layer at the bottom and we had weeds galore this spring, but dh has since pulled them out and put jointing sand down and it's been 2 months and all fine .. so far!
I think jointing sand is a must to help stop weeds coming through .. i heard

brimfull · 25/07/2006 13:58

thanks ,like the sound of the matt concrete look,as I've only seen the horrid shiny ones.Must look out for one.
So the quality of the blockpaving might mean weeds or no weeds?Need to investigate I think.
