Can I use a Kobo with my amazon account?

ds2's kindle screen has broken. I have a kindle as well and I download books for both of us from amazon from one account. If I buy him a kobo, does this mean I can't do that any more?

I've just had a quick google for you and it seems you can but it's a bit fiddly and requires formatting each book into the right format for kobo
