Highchairs

Hiya All

Haven't usded this site for quite a while now but was hoping that I could get some advice on highchairs.

I have looked at poss about 10 different makes, those including mama's & papa's, fisher price, chicco, mothercare etc etc

Which one did u buy and why?

Replies would be greatfully received.

We were told not to bother about whether the chair folded, as no-one folds it after a while, just lives around it. Not true - we fold ours every evening, and what's more I wish the one with wheels had been available when we bought ours. On the whole we're very happy with our Chicco - robust, lots of different (and usefull) positions, easy to clean and only one finger-trap (if you slide the tray on while the child is in the seat). Only complaints are lack of wheels (current models have them) and the fact that the cushion wore out very quickly and we have had to get another, but I think that would probably be the case with any vinyl cushion.

We bought a Tripp Trapp and dutifully put DS1 in it every time he ate and consequently had to wash the cushion every day (fabric - not wipe clean!)and scrape off mashed carrots from the wood - and you have to do it immediately or it sticks!
We then bought a plastic fold up chair (which fits on an ordinay chair)from ToysRus for about £25 for visits to Grandma's and then used it all the time at home as well! The seat comes in 3 parts, has a tray and can even be put in the dishwasher if necessary. Not as attractive as the Tripp Trapp obviously but much more practical.
However, now DS1 is older he uses the Tripp Trapp for sitting at the table for crayons and stuff as well as eating so I am actually really glad we bought it - I just think we bought it too early!

I love my Trip Trap, love it. I even descended into total muminess and embroidered her name on the fabric cushion at the top. You do have to give it the once over ater meals but I reckon you'd have to do that with a plastic one anyway.

We bought a Mamas and Papas at ToysRUs last year and are very happy with it. I like several things about it:

  • It has several chair positions (useful for when the baby can't sit up easily)
  • It's reasonably easy to keep clean.
  • There are two trays - you can lift one off if the top one is dirty and you need a clean tray quickly, or you can use one for food and one for toys.
  • The seat is nicely padded and seems comfortable.
  • It has wheels and brakes.

We have folded it up only once - to take it to a friend's house - but it was useful to be able to put it in the car then.

We had a Cossatto top of the range but tbh, it wasn't worth the money. We never used the variable heights on offer and with all the fancy bits and pieces, an awful lot of food got stuck into an awful lot of very small spaces. We folded it about twice, I think. We had a M/care one before that, and in a different kitchen we did fold it each night.

If looking now, I'd go for something without too many places for food to get into, and also one that doesn't splay the feet too widely - tripping over the legs was a favourite pastime for us! Plastic is probably easier to clean than chrome.

We got the Tripp trapp. It's the best bit of kit we bought - most of the other 'first-time' baby purchases we made I wouldn't go for if I had my time again! It's fantastic - no tray so means that your little one can eat meals at the table for the start. I think it encourages sociable family eating and learning the basics of table manners - both my two are great at eating and out and about in restaurants and I'm sure it's because they have always been 'included' at the table. Had to prise my ds out of it when our dd was old enough to use it - we actually pondered buying a second one as he was still happily using it (as a booster seat) at 3. Agree it's a bit tricky to clean but I would imagine most seats are when you're at the 'puree' stage.

I haven't seen the Trip Trapp so I will have to do a bit of research on this on the web later.

Oldiemum - was it the prima pappa one you went for?

I adore the Tripp Trapp too. Used it with DD from 5 months and have always loved it. Looks good and is very practical too. Gave up with the cushion once DD was feeding herself as a pain to keep washing. DD is now 22 months and we uuse it for every single meal - breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. We have just taken the front bit off so it is now more of a chair for her. We also always use it at the table for art and craft work. Easy to keep clean too - just wipe the wood down.

I love the fact that it allows Dd to be part of the family meal, and not isolated in her own chair and table. DD eats at the table with us. Certianly have not missed having a tray at all.

It is also very good for muscles in babies and toddlers as makes them sit properly and feet are always supported.

Not cheap I know but will last for ever!

We originally bought the East Coast wooden folding one which is great.

However, last year we also bought the cheap Ikea one (£18 with tray) to take to grandparents and DS (19 months) insists on sitting in this.

Really easy to clean and nice and roomy for DS. Best 18 quid we've spent. Our local v. expensive restaurant has them too, so must be a design classic!

BTW - great having two highchairs for visiting children.

We didnt bother with a highchair but bought the one from Mothercare that sits at the table. We dont use the tray and ds can sit up at the table and eat with us as well.

Would definitely recommend it and it was so cheap as well
