School "Gym Shoes" - which type?

Ok, i'm talking the black canvas shoes that we had when we were at school. Known to me as "gym shoes" but I suspect there could be regional variations.

Ds starts pre-school nursery in August (Scotland) and we'll need to buy these for the first time.

Do I go for the elastic at the front type or the velcro ones (I'm assuming velcro will be easier to get on and off). Do I get Clarks ones or M&S or Asda? He's a standard width fitting.

Any recommendations?

Well, we just bought some for dd at the same time as her school shoes (Startrite), then went to M+S and saw that they were £2 a pair!! So I would say M+S are fine. Dd was quite able to cope with velcro at that age, and as long as there is room for the toes, and the shoes stay on his feet, you don't need them properly fitted.

thanks tissy, £2 a pair is certainly a bargain. reckon we'll try them out...

dd's had two pairs of the M&S ones and they've been great.

I found velcro ones were easier, the slip on ones are often very hard to slip on. Just have to try different makes on to see which ones fit best.

Just remembered we called them 2 bob sliders . Scottish too.
