Is there a simple way to search for free ones?

Type in free in the search box. There are loads though so you'd be better off stating a subject too or you'll be there all day!

Go on to the kindle books page. On the right hand side there are a couple of columns, one is 100 best selling and the other is 100 free. Or just put free kindle books in the search bar.

Tried searching 'free kindle books' but it just bought up an actual book called 'how to get free kindle books'

They update it all the time as well, so every day there's more on there - if I leave it for a week I'm like a kid in a candy store!

Browse the type of books you want to read eg crime, and then using the filter button sort them in order low price to high price.

You get the free ones first.
