we have a panasonic - fantastic screen. john lewis has one.

key thing about them is battery life (crucial that it is at least 4 hrs), screen (although most are pretty good now) and noise when you play them. our panasonic is pretty much silent, some of the cheap ones have such noisy fans you can hardly hear the soundtrack...

best cash we ever spent btw - can plug them into tvs in hotel rooms abroad and get lots of extra morning sleep while they watch the aristocats or whatever.

also v good for planes and kids - either if you are flying in europe with no entertainment system or if the selection on the plane system is not age appropriate or dull or whatever.

never used them in the car - like to talk to the children in the car personally. although I can see if you were driving to norfolk or somewhere it would be just as useful as in a plane

is it \link{http://www.johnlewis.com/Audio+and+TV/DVD+and+Video/Shop+by+Feature/Portable+DVD+Players/230306167/Product.aspx\this one} pph?

It says 3 hrs battery is that right?

I saw a philips one in Richer Sounds \link{http://www.richersounds.co.uk/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=PHIL-PET700\here} not a v big screen but a good one and it is less than half the price, I wonder what the diff is

I did read someone on here saying one they bought was crap in the car (we go to for eg Wales quite often, 4 or 5 hrs in the car so figured it might be good for really long journeys although we haven't had any probs so far)

Make sure that you check if it's got enough headphone sockets- some have one, others have two. We have Philips one which has been great. Got it from Amazon last year and is small enough to take on plane. Some of the car ones are quite bulky.

ours is quite old now so it isn't that one. 3 hrs sounds ok - wouldn't go for any less though. there is a geek site somewhere that reviews all these, let me see if I can find it for you
