Anyone's child playing this? DS has no friends at the mo. and he would like to visit other villages :)

my dd plays this! :) (she hasn't been for a while though so it's probably overgrown with weeds)
I'm sure she'd love to visit your ds's village.

SparklyGothKat · 13/06/2006 09:58

he has only just started it last week and we managed to get a Wifi thingie yesterday so it plugs into my PC and uses my broadband connection. how does it work?? Do you have to input friend's numbers??

My DD2 got this too.....also got one of the dog games too. she has tried to 'visit' other villages, and also tried to 'meet up with other dogs' too, but don't yu have to be within a certain radius for it to work? her cousin has a ds, and one of her friends, and the only time so far that they have managed to link up with each other is when they are in the same house.

she would love to know if it goes further afield tho:)

geekgrrl · 13/06/2006 10:00

I'm not sure, will ask dh. We've only ever done it between our DSs at home (saddos that we are dd, dh and I have one eachGrin) but I know dh has played some other stuff online.
I'll be back later and let you know what he says. :)

SparklyGothKat · 13/06/2006 10:00

if there is one in the same house, it works by the inbuilt wi-fi, if you have wireless broadband you can set it up to use that connection. I had to buy a USB wi-fi connection which was £30

psychomum, you can do a local thing (where you have to be almost in the same room) or with WiFi online.

SparklyGothKat · 13/06/2006 10:06

I had to buy \link{http://www.game.co.uk/ViewProduct.aspx?cat=11229&mid=328523\this} to get the DS online

Now thats a fab idea in theory....but then she will being bugging me for even more PC time and depriving meWink...

altho.....DH has preomised me my very OWN PC Grin, but that won't be until some of my accident money comes thro....

BUT.....if I say that the kiddies are beginning to need the PC more and more and that with five there is getting to be some clashing of time tables maybe he'll cave early....

geekgrrl · 13/06/2006 10:12

they don't need to do anything with the PC at all (in fact our PC doesn't even need to be switched on). Just having the router means they can do it all on their DS. :)

SparklyGothKat · 13/06/2006 10:13

I was on MN while DS was on animal crossing yesterday, its just a connection so they can play. You won;t lose any PC time :):)

For SGK's gizmo you need to have the PC on, but that's it - they can sit at the other end of the room.

haven't read complete thread but just wondered---i know i'm thick!-how do kids interact with each other on their d s?! My 3 had one each for their birthdays but still haven't got round to "connecting" them so that they can all play the same game...! is it simple or do you have to be technolgy whiz kid?!

cutekids · 13/06/2006 10:30

By the way, sorry to hijack your thread!

psychomum5 · 13/06/2006 10:33

oooh....will get it for her then if it not gonna interfere with my pootah timeGrin.

won't tell DH tho....will let him think that we really really need to get two pootahs soonWink...like NOWGrin

(probably won't believe me tho:()

Uhggg this game is driving us mad. DS has only just got a DS so we are very much novices. He's managed to pick lots of things up but how do you empty your pockets. He has no bells. Was told to sell the items to tom nook but how? Whenever we go to the shop to work TN just tells him to empty his pockets and we are going round in cicles. I went to the website and there is loads of stuff about what you can do but we just can't get going. Are we thick!

Chamomile · 05/01/2007 23:08

Katherine, I have been playing ds's animal crossing all evening. It's great fun. To empty your pockets go to your house and then click on the blue arrow in the top right corner to bring up everything in your pockets. Then click on each item and it will give you the option to drop on floor. Then go back to the shop. Tom Nook only has 4 or 5 tasks for you and when that is finished you collect stuff again and take it to him to sell. He wont buy anything yet till you've finished working for him. If you need any more help let me know.

Hulababy · 08/01/2007 09:15

I have this game. How do I actually catch a fish? I have a rod, and see fish inthe water near me. But I can never actually catch one!

And what is the net for? Bugs?

What is the actual purpose of the game too?

allmytimeonmumsnet · 09/01/2007 10:15

Thanks Chamomile. We are progressing now and DS is getting very involved with it. I do find it frustrating though that there is such a shortage of instructions. I mean its good in that it makes you experiment but also very frustrating as you seem to go round in circles a lot trying to figure it out.

One other question. DD now wants a DS too for her birthday in March. I know that if you have 2 they can communicate and I know you can "visit" in animal crossing. Presumably though I would need 2 copies of the game or do they visit at different times (i.e. taking turns). Can't get my head round the sharing part.

allmytimeonmumsnet · 09/01/2007 10:16

sorry changed my name!

Chamomile · 09/01/2007 20:34

Allmytime..,yes, if you want to have 2 games running and visit each other in different towns you need 2 copies of the game but do you realise you can have up to 4 people living in the same house? So DD could borrow ds's game and click "new resident" and she would end up in the same house as ds's character.
Only one of the characters can be awake at one time but they can interact by writing each other notes and sending each other presents. I have joined in and it's great fun. I borrow ds's nintendo after he's gone to bed and wake my character up and then write letters to DS1 and 2 and send them stuff and they are really excited the next day to check their mail.

Chamomile · 09/01/2007 20:41

Hulababy, the purpose of the game is just to hang out in animal crossing as far as I can tell.
To catch a fish: first you have to see the silhouette of a fish, then you cast your rod directly in front of it's line of vision. It will circle and nibble at the bait but don't pull in till you hear a "plop". As soon as you hear that you click straight away and reel it in. Until you've played a few times you wont understand how excited I was last night to catch a rare stringfish

allmytimeonmumsnet · 10/01/2007 09:57

Right I'm with you. So if we only have one copy and they share it, they could move it between machines - there would be two people in the same house but only one awake at a time. That would work wouldn't it. Does that mean you have two beds up there? Cute. Ahhh.

Chamomile · 10/01/2007 10:36

Yes, it's great fun but could cause problems if your 2 dc dont get on. It didn't take mine long to twig they could wake the other character up and pinch their stuff.
