Can anyone recommend a cheap place where I can buy black out curtains and blinds?

I would like to disassociate myself from any childcare gurus or any other gurus in asking this. I just want them for me, because the bloody dawn chorus plus the light wakes me up at 5AM and does my head in. (Why do the birds have to shriek so?) I've looked on John Lewis but they just have very expensive curtain linings (sounds like hard work) and a very limited range of blinds. Any other recommendations?

If you're in Scotland - Remnant Kings. Got blackout material last week for under a tenner - a small price to pay for my sanity as dd now getting up at 7.30 rather than 5.30 - hurrah!

ikea do v cheap blackout blinds that you trim to size. i have a white one and a blue one

We got ours from dunelm mill, which is a cheapish materila/curtain place. I don't know if it's a local shop or a chain.

Gurus or not, mine are invaluable for ds's room!

i got blackout lining from a curtain shop and made those into blinds.

Ikea do DP fittable black out blinds in a variety of colours, which would work wonderfully well had DP brought the correct size (I said he could fit them I didn't say he knew how to measure).

I will see if I can find a link. They were very reasonable.

Think dunelm are a chain? The were cheap and are very good, you trim them to size.

I just bought some blackout curtain linings from an Ebay seller (id pandoras-upholstery) They were much cheaper than others I saw online, very good quality and I got them the day after I paid. They hook onto the back of existing curtains using the same curtain hooks. Bit fiddly but it doesn't take tooo long to do.
I have found it pretty impossible to black out sufficient light to keep DD asleep past 5am though with just blinds and curtain-linings (still streams out top and sides), but it would keep me happy!

Or paint windows with black paint?

Have discovered the Argos blinds - looks like the best cheap option.

And the Ebay one looks hopeful.

Thanks for all your help, I'm looking forward to some unbroken sleep plus no more grumbles from DS about not being able to get to sleep because it's too light. (He then complains in winter that it's too dark.)

I got blackout blinds last year in ASDA. The only problem with the dark coloured ones is that they absorb the heat from the sun. So best to go with the dodgy off white ones.

If you want the room to be properly dark, blinds, etc probably won't be totally effective - as someone else said, light gets around the sides, etc. What I did was buy some heavy duty blackout material from a fabric stall at a market and attached it to the window frame - total darkness now even during the day! You could use velcro or drawing pins.
