DD's 7th birthday coming up and she is a very keen photographer. She has a very basic camera and uses it a lot, but she really wants a zoom lens so she take nature photographs. I have a budget of up to £90-£100. I have researched these two but don't know if they would be suitable.

I'm no expert, but a mate of mine has a Lumix and really rates it. It's probably better than the Fuji. I don't think you will find anything better for the money.

I would take her to a shop and get her to hold the camera if possible - these ones are built for adult hands and it could be a problem - my dd is tiny, 11yr old and has v small hands and struggles with bigger cameras. Other than that lumix are great cameras, my Mum has smaller point and shoot as her lightweight camera and the quality is great, my friend has the dslr lumix G 3 and also highly rates it.

Whatever you get, I would recommend a "whatever happens" warranty. ds2 went through quite a few cameras before he got the hang of how easily they can be damaged. He's not a clumsy or careless child, but digital camera screens just seemed to be a victim of his energetic and enthusiastic life!
