Stair gate recommendation

Sorry if this has been done to death but I find Mumsnet search tool really unhelpful.

I am going to buy a stair gate. Anyone have any opinions. I hate them at other people's houses as they are really awkward to get through and I always feel like I am going to trip down them. THe last thing I want is to be carrying LO and to go tumbling down the stairs because I tripped over the bl**dy bar of the stair gate!

Would you consider one that you screwed to the wall? then you could have one of the ones without the bar.

Oh okay - thanks - they sound more stable than pressure mounted ones. Are they all pretty much the same or are some easier to use than others?

I have found that they are all pretty much the same. You get used to the one you have. I have had stairgates for the last five years and still can't open ones at other peoples houses.
