What kind of duvet cover has your 6 year old DS got?

DS is beginning to be ashamed of his Bob the Builder duvet covers and I expect he will be discussing this with his therapist in 15 years time if I don't do something about it Grin

Unfortunately good quality bed linen in NZ is extortionate and the cheap novelty stuff (superman, spiderman etc, which he wants) is more 50/50 polyester cotton which we don't want as DS is sweats a lot at night ...

DH is coming to the UK in June and has promised to buy DS new bed linen ...

So: What's your 6 year old got?
What's cool and in?
What won't he grow out of too quickly?
What is available? I seem to remember that we got the Bob the Builder stuff from Woolworths and it was very reasonable ...

TIA

my 6 yr old ds1 has a selection of vintage (1980's) transformers and a team covers i had from a charity shop i used to work in..he love the..hasnt a clue what a team is but stil loves theem, he wont go to bed if thomas or 'baby' patterned one is on the bed..

tortoise · 03/05/2006 21:50

my ds2 6 has Action man!
Blue camouflage.
Argos have a good selection for children's bedding.

100% cotton kid's stuff tends to be expensive here aswell - all the designs you mention are mainly 50/50 here. John Lewis have some nice ones that are 100% cotton (pricey though). I can't remember where we got ours - might have been Ikea (certainly got the sheets there) but I'm not sure. Dd's friends (who are 6) have either got plain bed linen or normally some sort of sport related linen (loads of England ones around at the mo!).

jamsam · 04/05/2006 22:14

mine have also got camoflauge ( ohh, bad spelling) from asda, £6 for d/cover, pillow case and sheet

as my two ds's share they tend to have the same or something similer to avoid nighttime antics...but im sure they dont really care..

bonkerz · 04/05/2006 22:21

D has a few sets from Studio catalogue. Mostly football and space themes.

AllieBongo · 04/05/2006 22:21

cars and a union jack with a mini. All from Next

blueteddy · 04/05/2006 22:29

The Next rocket quilt cover. He also has a football one as a spare - not because he is into football, but because it was cheap in the sale!

Mo2 · 04/05/2006 22:47

Hi Ghosty - I have exactly the same dilemma - hate the poly/cotton ones as they make DS1 (also 6) all sweaty.
Have just recently got rid of Next Rocket and Spiderman yuk covers and replaced with IKEA blue 100% cotton one ( x 2) - it has some sort of castle/ dragon theme at the edges, but is mostly blue checked. He voluntarily said he 'slept much better' with it.
I'll see if I can find it on the IKEA website....

Mo2 · 04/05/2006 22:51

Not on the IKEA site any more, but here are a few others:

\link{http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=7&catalogId=10103&langId=-20&topcategoryId=15594&parentCats=155941582615841&categoryId=15841&cattype=sub\IKEA kids duvet covers}

They're a bit scratchy at first, but soften after a couple of washes....

alexsmum · 04/05/2006 23:21

ds has got a designers guild one-blue with animals on-probably too babyish really but matches the curtains, thomas the tank one, jungle one,and Blush a winnie the pooh one!
think we need to decorate and update the bedding!

marthamoo · 04/05/2006 23:24

At 6, he had the ubiquitous Next rocket. Now, at the mature age of 9, he has a Tesco Value one (£5) - blue gingham. Plain as you like and "not babyish...thanks Mum."

collision · 04/05/2006 23:43

Ds (4) has got dinosaurs and an Ikea one with circles on it.

Next are great and Debenhams do nice ones too. Asda is cheap and cheerful.

Cadmum · 04/05/2006 23:50

We also opted for Ikea ones for all 3 dc.

Clary · 04/05/2006 23:59

DS1 is 6 and still has his first ones, quite nice children's ones from John Lewis, one with children playing and one with mice and big bits of cheese (niceer than it sounds...)
Picked up a bargain spare one in Sainsbo's the other day for £15, pirate applique and all cotton. More for ds2 (3) tho.
I would be tempted if buying now for DS1 to go for something plain-ish and neutral - stripes, say, or just a plain bright blue. But then I hate character anything!

Clary · 05/05/2006 00:07

now \link{http://www.johnlewis.com/Home+and+Garden/Bed+Linen/Bed+Linen/Children's+Duvet+Covers/230216837/Product.aspx\this one} is not bad except that it's poly-cotton.

Alipiggie · 05/05/2006 03:26

Does depend what you want to spend, but can highly recommend The White Company, not cheap but fantastic good quality cotton bedding and they do fabulous selection for children - animals, rockets etc. It washes and washes and stays fresh.

threebob · 05/05/2006 03:57

Ds loves his one made out of T shirt material - okay he's not 6, but as it's plain and very snuggly - but not sweaty at all I thought I'd mention it.

My mum bought it for around 50p - well probably a fiver.

Ds needs cotton too - however we have found that a duvet inner which is cotton, a cotton bottom sheet and a poly cotton duvet cover for those got to have Thomas bed linen moments works almost as well.

Steppy1 · 05/05/2006 05:21

DS (5) has....Rocket...(because he wants to be a Thunderbird space rescuer when he's a man!) spare set is boat themed....... how "traditional" we are !!!!

sugarfree · 05/05/2006 08:23

Just bought DS a reversable set,red/blue from Argos and it was BOGOF too.Nice one!
