Washing machine crisis - anyone bought a John Lewis model

Would really appreciate feedback from anyone who has recently purchased a washing machine in the £400-500 bracket...our ancient AEG finally turned its toes up at the weekend.

We are looking at either John Lewis or one of the less ££££ from the Siemens range, specifically the XLM168 something or other.

Has anyone got any good recommendations to share? We line-dry so it needs to have a killer spin.

All suggestions welcomed with gratitude. We haven't considered AEG this time because we heard their reliability has gone down since they were engulfed by Hoover. Quite willing to be persuaded otherwise Wink

Bought a Bosch which is fine 1400 spin. JL own brand come with 3 year guarantee (2 years normally). We also had an AEG which was on for 3 times a day for 15 years and wasn't quite dead when we changed it.

Marina · 02/05/2006 10:11

Thanks Sherbet, should also consider Bosch I think. I feel disloyal to our dear old Oko-Lavamat as I am not sure it is totally dead either, but we know spares are hard to come by.
I am 99% certain the JLP machines are either Siemens, Miele or Bosch under the cover.

Oh goodness, she hasn't got endofpartyitis has she? Surely she should be looking after YOU as you recuperate...

That is so kind, mail on way :)

I bought a John Lewis machine just before Christmas. Not the cheapest model but the next one up. I've had no problems so far. I line dry too, and this has a spin of 1200 and I'm impressed by how much water it gets rid of.

Marina · 02/05/2006 11:00

Ah, excellent news bugsy. I am a JLP slavish consumer and that 3 year guarantee is very tempting. Dh is waffling on pompously by e-mail about viewing them first etc. I'd buy a Pantshredder Deluxe Floodette if someone could deliver it now, quite frankly.

Sorry Marina, no help from me, but lol @ Pantshredder Deluxe FloodetteGrin. And you have my sympathy - it's a nightmare being without a washing machine, isn't itSad.

Marina · 02/05/2006 11:11

Especially when your soon to be ex best friend domestic appliance coughs your son's school uniform out, covered in suds and dripping wet, onto the kitchen floor at 10pm on a Bank holiday night eh Jackie.
My parents are letting us use theirs (thank God they live round the corner now and not in Carlisle any more) but that comes with a lot of backchat along the lines of "don't you have a lot of clothes" and "isn't it astonishing how today's children can't make their vests and pants last all week like we had to in the 1930s"

Grin. I guess it's better than the launderette, though . Hope you get something sorted soon.

Marina · 02/05/2006 11:23

It is definitely better than the launderette Grin
Thanks. Am carpet-bombing dh with "do your bit" e-mails so we should have a result soon!

A viewing!!!! No disrespect to your dh, but is he mad? They all look the same: white with a big glass door at the front!!! I think the JL website has some nice piccies on it, won't that do?

Marina · 02/05/2006 11:28

Well, let's just say you'll know where to send the police when a man's dismembered body turns up jammed in an old washing machine on a landfill site somewhere...

Marina - I have had the "are your machines really miele?" (didn't ask about bosch) conversation with JL and found that they are definitely not. Miele and JL have a partnership whereby Miele make a range of machines that are only sold through JL but the JL own brand is not made by miele, although I bet they are made by one of the other good ones. We have one of those and it is the love of my life (also came with a 10 yr guarantee) although it weighs the same as an elephant and I felt a bit sorry for the JL guys who had to lug it up 2 flights of stairs.

oliveoil · 02/05/2006 11:30

lol at viewing

'hmmmmm, not sure I quite like the round shape of this door here, do they do them in square chrome?'

Sorry, forgot to say that was very helpful info Wilbur, thanks, might see if I can channel dh's insane zeal into a phone call to grill them about which German maker does make the JLP ones...

marina, we have the bosch (one with knobs was £100 cheaper in JL than the sleeker button one, a couple of years back) but have been eyeing up the JL ones too...gagging to hear what rpm spin you get

Marina · 02/05/2006 20:42

Despite Moo saying on an archive thread that Siemens "doesn't sound very nice" Grin we went for a Siemens XL168 something or other, simply on the grounds that it was the only one of our four shortlisted ones that Johnny Loulou's could send in a week. It has buttons not knobs but is pretty basic. The Bosch, Miele and JLP own brand (it's a Zanussi under there btw Wilbur) were all out of stock :(
Next sound to be heard in Marina Towers will be me lifting patio flagstones to stow what is left of dh Brookside stylee. He is downstairs still pouting about not being able to go in and bore the *rse off a salesperson and still walk out having plumped for the Siemens. Grrrrrr.

OP posts:
Marina · 02/05/2006 20:43

It will go at 1600rpm. Dh wibbling about it smashing china FFS
