Patio Heaters - any good?

Evening, All! We have some vouchers to spend in M&S (hooray!) and I was wondering about getting one of those gas patio heater thingies. Does anyone have one of these? I wondered if the gas cannisters were costly to buy? Also, with a little one around, are they quite heavy .. or are they easy to pull over, do you think? Our 15 month is rather active!

Gas cannisters, particularly when full, weigh an absolute tonne !

They're good if you're cold, LOL.

starlover · 25/04/2006 19:12

yes, we have one and it's fab! we stand it on our table and put the cable through the hole in the middle... the canisters are quite heavy.
i think ours was about £35 but much cheaper to get refilled thereafter and last forever.

mykidsmum · 25/04/2006 19:17

I was bought one as a present and love it lots particulalry when entertaining peeps who would love to go in and mess your house up because they are cold!

pesme · 25/04/2006 19:28

wear a jumper or go inside! heating outside is madness

northender · 25/04/2006 19:31

Afraid I'm with pesme. Heating fresh air seems incredibly wasteful and unnecessary imho.

bunyanvillas · 25/04/2006 19:36

Thank you for your opinions, chaps! I think I'm with the "for god's sake put on a jumper" brigade!

Or a fire pit is all the rage these days apparently!

Rowlers · 25/04/2006 20:52

We've got one of those chimychanga things but the snooty woman next door moans every time we use it.
Patio heaters shouldn't be allowed.

tallmummy · 25/04/2006 20:53

To keep really warm you could try walking on the hot coals!
Sorry sleep deprivation is taking it's toll. Best be off to bed. (huffles off with horlicks)

I really wish I could spell chiminey

hub2dee · 25/04/2006 22:14

Some use infrared or sommit (martianbishop ?) to not heat the air in between but to only irradiate your guests and make them feel warm....

... and then combust.

It's a chiminea, laydees.

Moomin · 25/04/2006 22:17

i had lovely time at friends' house last year sat outside with the chimineria (just to wind hub2dee up) blazing away. Blew my nose the next morning and contents of hanky were BLACK

sansouci · 25/04/2006 22:18

Heard they're terrible for the environment but I think we're done for anyway.

JackieNo · 25/04/2006 22:19

They seem very effective - keep next door and their guests outside for ages when we're trying to go to sleep (only slightly bitter - they don't do it too often)

Pagan · 25/04/2006 22:20

Chimneas or firepits are ok I think - it's a kind of primeval think to sit round a fire but those patio heaters - NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO - I'm with the wear a jumper crew!

hub2dee · 25/04/2006 22:23

I quite like mine. I like being warm. And we sit around in jumpers or coats anyway. It's toasty. Allows us to spend longer in the garden (ie later in the evening, and early / later in the year IYSWIM).
