American Fridge Freezers - do they need a water supply?

Just wondering, whether those American Fridge Freezers that produce ice and chilled water actually need to be plumbed or do they work as stand alone units??

They need to be plumbed into your cold water if you want to make ice cubes.

The supply is just a very small tube that can be run fairly long distances and under skirting board.
