I am thinking of painting our yet to be built conservatory and what a bit of advice.

It will go onto our kitchen which currently is BRIGHT BRIGHT blue with cream shaker units, black grantite worktops and stainless steel range. We are looking at \link{http://www.cotswoldco.com/product_info.php?dpi=C050&product=SEARCH&cele=1&SH=DADBDADDDADADDDGGEGFGBDDDFDFDFDBCNDFGBDBGFCNDEDEDIDBCNGCGGGEDJCNGDGEDHDBDDGEDCGCGBDJGEDJDADADADBDCDADADADHGNGBGMGBGCGBHCDADADADEDADADADADADADADBDFDADADADBDADADADADADADADADADADADADBDADADADADHGNGBGMGBGCGBHCDADADADBDB\sofa} here, with chocolate cushions, limestoney tiled floor, and it is brown wood (to match other wood in house).

So I want a colour that will look great with the brown, and then perhaps paint the same in teh kitchen.

What I need to know is how good Farrow & Ball paints are, and are they durable? Also ha anyone used Blue Ground? \link{http://www.farrow-ball.com/main.php?terr=uk\here} Looks nicer on paint chart, a sort of chalky but rich aqua/sky blue.

Also what do you think of teh combo??

dh had the last laugh when I said I wouldn't buy Fired Earth paint because Crown was just as good; I painted about a zillion coats in order to get a nice deep red shade and you could still see the undercoat through it.

I think on balance he'd probably rather be married to Enid....

We have Blue Green in our Living Room and Ballroom Blue in another. They have a lovely, flatness about them which sounds rather odd and uninspiring but is really beautiful. The way it changes colours with the light changing is beautiful. I love it and will definitely use it again when our extension is built.

cupcakes · 12/04/2006 15:29

or maybe it is Green Blue?

bundle · 12/04/2006 15:29

Ah - just sussed!! Scrap my previous message - it was Fired Earth paint that we thought was crap and NOT F&B....sorry everyone....my error... Blush

cupcakes · 12/04/2006 15:37

I did wonder - how could so many mumsnetters be wrong? Grin

HandbagAddiction · 12/04/2006 15:55

Grin !!

MrsBadger · 12/04/2006 16:05

Can't afford F&B, however nice they are, but did paint our bedroom as close to String as I could get - looks great.

ok, all you paint ponces will know this - what's the name of that green/grey colour that everyone in the Cotswolds paints their window frames?

bundle · 12/04/2006 16:06

card room green? pigeon?

DaddyCool · 12/04/2006 16:08

are we talking a greyed out duck egg blue because I like that colour alot.

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 12/04/2006 16:39

Blackened is greyed out duck egg blue.

Enid · 12/04/2006 17:05

Mrs B I think its Castle Gray (thats what everyone uses round here, not cotswolds though, dorset)

robin3 · 12/04/2006 17:09

I think they're great and the intensity of the colour is the best you can get.

My painter said you can't roller them on though and he suggested that we do a quick matt varnish over the top because frequent scrubbing will take the colour off. We didn't do this and have yet to test the durability.

MrsBadger · 12/04/2006 17:14

Enid - that's it - fantastic
am thinking of painting wooden garage doors and need a subtle rural colour that'll disappear into the undergrowth

NotAnOtter · 12/04/2006 17:17

I seem to only use f and b as there is a f and b shop in my small town....but recently used dulux for kids snug and preferred it. F and b all watery and shows every darn mark..... its so damned subtle ...even painted ds3's playhouse in it at the weekend .

I think i am beginning to hate it

Enid · 12/04/2006 17:21

its a lovely colour

but round here it means that you rent your house (its the colour the Ernest cook trust use to paint all their house woodwork)

MrsBadger · 12/04/2006 17:33

hah - our area is elitist in the other direction, and knowing that Farrow & Ball make paint and not (eg) designer trainers or rap records means you get filed under Nice. (but I do live in a weird schizophrenic army barracks-public school-commuter-market town)

Did have a good laugh at the owners of a very dull 1930s house who have painted all the the exterior render a Costwold stone colour (probably F&B again) and all the woodwork in Castle Grey in the hopes of making it look as good as the lovely real Costwold stone houses further down the road...

NotAnOtter · 12/04/2006 17:49

are you on the Apprentice Mrs B?

cod · 12/04/2006 17:49

enid you are a ponce

Hopecat · 12/04/2006 17:51

We bought the Farrow and Ball colour chart from the website (about £10), then got my friendly local paint-shop to scan the colours we wanted (which are all National Trust anyway) and mix them in Leyland, which is significantly cheaper than Dulux, but nicer to paint with (I think). Did our bedroom for £20 - 5l of paint. Looks fantastic, and VERY expensive. You just have to make sure your surface is well sugar-soaped and polyfilled to perfection before you start.

F&B is a total waste of money: it's about living a dream, not how it makes your walls look.

Close friend is a rather swanky interior designer, and this is always what she does in her own house.

CountessDracula · 12/04/2006 17:52

Enid · 12/04/2006 17:52

MrsBadger · 12/04/2006 17:54

CountessDracula · 12/04/2006 17:54
