The Braun ones look good but expensive. Are there any others that are as good but cheaper?

i have been advisd by 3 people (doctor, nurse and cons paed) NOT to use these!
our hospital no longer uses them either.

they are very easy to misuse and thus can be very inaccurate as a result.

i was told to get a digital underarm one, which I did and am very pleased with! £8 in boots!

nailpolish · 29/03/2006 14:43

when i worked as a nurse we trialled ear thermometers and the results proved they are a load of shite. subsequently they were all removed from the ward and replaced with disposable oral/rectal ones

(but that was in a hospital!)

i have \link{http://www.jojomamanbebe.co.uk/cgibin/priamlnk.cgi?CNO=1&MP=ITM^GIN200&CAT=CBH61&SPCAT=IT&CODE=A5501&TYPE=F&SHOP=TYP\this one} and i feel its pretty accurate

nailpolish · 29/03/2006 14:44

i also like it because you can check a sleeping baby's temp without disturbing him/her

Tinker · 29/03/2006 14:44

Do you (I mean one) really need one though. I mean, hot is hot and not hot isn't?

nailpolish · 29/03/2006 14:46

its quite reassuring tinker

and also there are times when i have thought dd is hot but her temp is ok and vice versa

you can be hot but your body temp is not iyswim

WideWebWitch · 29/03/2006 14:46

Ours was £10 I think from that big electrical shop, can't remember what it's called, it's on the corner of North Rd/Glos Rd/The Arches in Bristol. Sorry, not much help. We've hardly ever used it though, I'd go with an underarm one too, they're v cheap in Boots.

bundle · 29/03/2006 14:47

i use ours to see if temp coming down once i've given calpol/nurofen, not really to find out about when they are hot, as a fever that doesn't come down can be a problem.

bundle · 29/03/2006 14:47

(ours is braun, got it from boots)

Tinker · 29/03/2006 14:51

Got mine from Lloyds about 18 montsh ago so eldest went for 7.5 years without me ever knowing her temp. She had febrile convulsions once so I'm guessing that makes me a Very Bad Mother.

festiveface · 29/03/2006 14:52

so would a no touch one be as accurate as one that goes in the mouth then?
I have had one of those feverscan forehead strip things but found them not very accurate.

Tiggiwinkle · 29/03/2006 14:56

I have the same one as nailpolish and it seems as accurate as an oral one. (I checked the result to compare). Our GP uses the same one too!

nailpolish · 29/03/2006 14:59

an underarm reading is as accurate as on oral one if you leave it there long enough (thats what they do in hospital if oral is not suitable)

but i liked the no-touch one (i linked earlier) as you can use it on a sleeping baby

Polgara2 · 30/03/2006 14:48

Nailpolish - is the one you have the Thermotek one or Summer Infant? They both look the same to me except one is a bit cheaper Grin. Want to invest but will go for cheaper one if I can. TIA

nailpolish · 30/03/2006 17:56

polgara, ive posted a link earlier on the thread as to which one i have

(i have the older version, i think its a chicco?)

hth

Polgara2 · 30/03/2006 19:15

Yes, I did have a look NP but it didn't say which make it was. I assume they can be used for all family? Thanks

nailpolish · 31/03/2006 08:32

oops sorry

its not very clear i agree

im not sure if it can be used on the whole family, im not sure if it would be accurate on adults Smile

Polgara2 · 31/03/2006 09:07

Not too worried about us adults, we're just hot or HOT Grin. Thinking about 5 and 8 year olds really.

Tiggiwinkle · 31/03/2006 09:09

I have one and they are fine for everyone, as far as I know-as I said earlier, our GP uses one.

Polgara2 · 31/03/2006 09:11

Great thanks Tiggiwinkle - will go and order one.
