Boring Slow Cooker question...

Nbg · 26/03/2006 15:50

I got a Morphy Richards one in Jan as a wedding anniversary pressie.
Used it for the first time yesterday just cooking a simple stew.

Anyhow, started it at 10am on medium setting, by 4pm it was way off being cooked, the potatoes were still hard so I whacked it up to high for an hour or so and it was still not done.

I've put it on again this morning and 5 mins ago, have had to dish the potatoes out to boil them as they are still rock hard!

Have I done something wrong or could the slow cooker be a bit duff?

Sounds like you have a duff one.. A stew should be cooked in 6 hours on mediium.

jmum6 · 26/03/2006 15:53

I don't have to do that withours - sounds like the heating elements gone - sorry!

nutcracker · 26/03/2006 15:53

Sounds like it isn't working properly.

I have cooked stews, casseroles , whole chickens, joints of pork and everything in mine and I usually put it on at about 10am and it is cooked by 4pm. I do always put it on high though.

Nbg · 26/03/2006 15:55

Oh god!

I know it's a slow cooker but 2 days is a bit too slow.

The only other thing I thought it could be was me filling it too much. Would that make a difference?

Although it's not right to the top of the pot.

No i fill mine to the top and it's fine.

Nbg · 26/03/2006 15:58

Pants.

I'll be lucky if I can take it back now. See if my mum still has the receipt.

Thanks Smile

You do need to cut the veggies relatively small though, and were they covered by the liquid or not? This could make a difference, especially if the rest of the stew seems done. HTH

serenity · 26/03/2006 16:38

When you put it all in the pot did you use boiling stock? It won't work 'from cold', a slow cooker maintains the heat rather than heats it from cold.

If you did put it all in hot, and it still wasn't cooked after all that time, then I agree with everyone else that it's probably broken.

nutcracker · 26/03/2006 16:38

I never use boiling stock.

Yorkiegirl · 26/03/2006 16:39

what serenity said about the stock is what I did the first time I used it.... put cold stock in and the potatoes didn't cook. Have learned from that and now add boiling stock!

serenity · 26/03/2006 16:42

OK, maybe different ones work in other ways? Mine definitely says to use hot stock etc, but then mine is the sort where you can put the pot on the stove to seal the meat, brown the veggies etc, and then it sits on its own little hot plate to do the slow cooking part.

Nbg · 26/03/2006 16:44

Everything was cut small as always and I made sure there was enough gravy in to cover all ingreadiants.

Nbg · 26/03/2006 16:46

Oh no
Used hot stock, even the meat was partially cooked because I had to defrost it in the microwave.

I've had to put in lentils to thicken it up, that was 2 hours ago and they still haven't cooked!

sounds like its knackered then!

Lucycat · 26/03/2006 16:47

I'd give up now, transfer it to a casserole and chuck it in the oven! - or microwave! nuke it Grin

Nbg · 26/03/2006 16:48

How can that be!!!!

Bought in Jan and it's the first time I've bloomin well used it!
Typical!

Is it heating up at all? Could it be something really silly like a fuse or something?

If this is the first time you've used it then I'd still try and take it back (they can only tell you to bog off) Anyway, aren't most electrical things covered by a 1 years manufacturer's guarantee? If the store is iffy contact MR directly.

GeorginaA · 26/03/2006 16:58

I had a Tefal 3 in 1 that was like that. Was definitely duff. Another vote for take it back.

Nbg · 26/03/2006 17:01

My mum can't find the receipt but I may have it so will have a look later.

It was bought from Asda and is a Morphy Richards so I'm sure if I gave them a call they'll be ok with it.

It is bloody annoying though!

Adsa are very good at replacing things, I took a DVD player back that packed up after 8 months without a receipt, they replaced it for me, no worries.
