Major tantrum from dh this morning, as he got stuck inside his car- it was frozen up completely and he had to use the kettle to unfreeze the lock, then got inside to start the engine and blower, and the door re-froze Dd and I were inside the house so didn't hear him banging and shouting, he was hopping when he finally got out. It didn't help when I told him he should take his mobile everywhere with him. He hadn't covered the car last night because I'd given him an electric lock-defroster thingy and an electric windscreen scraper for Christmas and he thought I'd be cross if he didn't try them (I would ).
Clearly, this isn't the first time this has happened- this model of Polo seems to be particularly vulnerable- we got stuck inside it in sub-zero temperatures a couple of years back and just had to sit it out until it warmed up enough to unstick the doors. Several times a year we have this palaver.
I drive a LandRover because I need to get into work in a hurry sometimes, and if there is snow and the gritters haven't been, it's impossible to get out of our road (steep uphill bit at both ends). I've offered to let him have the LandRover except when it's snowing, but he won't now drive it, as he's been caught speeding in it, and had a minor bump (probably the other party's fault)which resulted in us needing to buy a new rear indicator.
So, I think we need a new car for dh. Can't be too expensive, so brand new is out, and have a diesel Polo Saloon P-Reg to trade in. Would I be better going for a better VW (as far as I recall, this didn't happen with the Golf I used to have)? Or should I try for something like a Volvo or Saab that is built to withstand cold weather? Would have to be fairly old, as newish ones are V. expensive.
Ok, in the scheme of things a fairly trivial problem, but I'm getting fed up with dh's tantrums and would like to avert as many as I can!
