Really want one, have got 3 young DC, and live on a country estate with a long nasty drive ( its nasty in the ice ) so looking for a 4x4. Its either a Touareg, or a Discovery...

Had previous model when I had 3 kids under 3. Loved it and would buy again. We lived in rural Derbyshire and it was fantastic

A Touareg or a 747? Neither.

The Touareg is going to be more reliable than the Disco, perfectly capable off road, rubbish on fuel (2.5tonne 4x4 and shaped like a brick). However, the country set may look down at driving a VW, so the Land Rover will probably have more cachet. Old Money buy Subarus (or used to) so an Outback or Forester is a good choice there. Top notch 4WD system on them, too.

Not sure why you'd want something that size unless you wanted to tow? RAV4, Freelander or CRV a more sensible size and much more eco. Country set people don't look down on any sensible 4X4 but they would chuckle at something poncey. Toureg is a bit poncey and terrible MPG. But more reliable than the Disco. The new Freelanders are meant to be reliable whereas the old ones weren't.

Had a 3.0l Touareg and loved it although it really chewed through tyres.

Now have a Discovery because the Touareg boot was too small. The Disco is also fabulous, produces almost identical fuel figures and is easier on tyres.

Touareg servicing will be cheaper, intervals are longer and suspension set up is way less complex. A standard Disco is better off road, and easier to use there. A Touareg needs a few additions to be good off road.

The Touareg was huge fun and managed sort of OK. The Disco is incredible and manages with ease. Neither have ever (touch wood) broken down.
