What Car?

Ok ladies, and the occasional gent. I am currently trying to buy a house and get a new job after moving back to the UK after 4 years abroad (I am a glutten for punishment). Having been abroad for 4 years I am really not genned up on cars. We have got one car currently, but when I start work we will need to get another when we have moved to the new house (if it goes through ok).

I will need something economical, low on tax costs and insurance costs. I have got a 2 year old with a car seat, but I am not worried about having a 2 door as long as I can disable the air bag on the passenger side. Must be under 5 years old and a reliable sort. Up to 5k max. Any idea's?

There is lots of helpful info about different cars on www.honestjohn.co.uk/

My first thought was that the Honda Jazz was economical, practical and reliable, but Honest John thinks they don't age well. The Toyota Yaris also has more in the "what's bad" listing than I expected. The Suzuki Swift looks fairly good, but will be harder to find. The Nissan Note is also a good alternative.

Thanks. I appreciate it. I am not very good with cars. Ask me about Motorcycles or Horses and I am fine, cars no!
