what car have you got?

The convertible ones where you start with a harness, then a booster seat with adult belt then cushion, although tempting as they appear to last a long time, tend to do poorly in Which ? surveys. You may need to look up US safety data fro the Fisher Price one. Also we have found covers tend to fray after about 4/5 years use anyway so chances of them lasting 8 in good condition are pretty slight. Britax Duo isofix (which can also be secured with an adult belt where isofix system is not available) and Maxi Cosi Priori seem to perform consistently well. If you would like him to continue to rear face , and there is evidence that this is still safer even after the baby seat is outgrown, there are a few like the Britax First Class and a Bebeconfort model.

Some will only fit certain cars and you may be restricted with a rear facing one by seat belt lenght. Isofix is a static built-in system behind the fabric of the car seat which enables you to fasten the child seat in the car solidly without the need to use the adult belt. There is normally a label stitched to a seat with it.

the maxi cosy priori is one of the best in the WHICH? report...

i have NEVER seen a 'multi stage' car seat do well in the Which report, and they seem to ALWAYS be in the unsafe do not buy section...

If you car has isofix go for the britax isofix, or else the maxi cosy priori... they will fit most cars...

beware thi cause i know vauxhalls are renound for having long buckles.... which can cause buckle crunch. If that happens you may need to have the buckeles shortened... or else in a crash they buckle will shatter, and seat will not be strapped in!

I have maxi cosi priori ..I am very glad we spent that bit extra it fits really snugly because of the lever at the bottom. also it reclines and my dd will always sleep in it wheras in my mums car she wont because her seat is v upright.

valiant · 19/03/2006 13:20

btw we went to halfords they bring them all out and try themn in your car to see which fits best..they are trained to do so ..I think the local baby shop does this too. Although my friend did this and came away with one that was £180 I think he frightened her into thinking cheap wasn't safe!

NannyL · 19/03/2006 17:03

yes... halfords DO "fit" then for you but beware... no of several people who have had them fitted wrong.... 1 fundamentally thw wrong way.... thank god they werent in a crash on their journey home before they read the instructions! They (naturally) assumed they had fitted it right!

Also they will tell you they are all as safe... that is WRONG.... fundamentally NOT all as safe as each other.... some are good others a crap!
